barry -> Making MONEY?????? (8/18/2006 17:43:27)

Hi All,

I just got off the phone with a pretty big web hosting company that I use. They explained that they are changing their business model. They will no longer do virtual hosting, only dedicated boxes.

The conversation that Brandon started in this thread http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-337573/tm.htm points to the template business changing as well as others.

I found it very difficult to make a living producing websites "on demand" even though I did it for 4 straight years.[;)] I averaged $30-50K (very hard fought[:@])

I recently returned to my real life and I am hesitant to get back into the web design on demand business.

So here is the question - what do you see as The Next Big Thing that smart folk like you and I should be researching??????[8|]

More and more I find that most of my income is coming from the servicing or maintaining of a site rather than the design. I have gravitated to customers that will always need lots of updates such as restaurants and bars.

I will design their site, but also have a contract for 1 year of service and get a credit card that they know I will be charging every month. Not a new idea, but a pretty consistent one.

My other source of income is setting up and billing for other professionals such as therapists, counselors, and other related medical fields. More and more people in the health related fields are going out on their own and need help. I charge those people 10% of the billing I do for them in a month. These two services together get me in the door past many others people as they know I can do the web work and billing for them.

Hi traveler98,

Thanks for the reply. The credit card on file is the trick![;)]

Actually way back in the 80's I had a part time job typing in the Medicare and insurance stuff for a heart specialist that consisted of 5 doctors. I simply imagined that all of that would be automated these days. But I would guess someone has to set up the interface, I will look into it.[:)]

But I did hear on NPR that some doctors are now replying to patient emails vesus a visit. If they think it is appropriate they hit the credit card on file. That would be simple to set up under a ssl layer. I will speak to some Doc's to see if they have interest.

Barry
