Custome error page within a web but not part of the web - 8/20/2006 13:03:11
OK, that probably does sound odd but here goes.

I have been looking into doing custom 404 and 401 error pages using FP2k (that is the only one Yahoo webhosting works with [No .htaccess file exists or can be used] and I have had my site for over a year)

I am now trying to create the custom pages so have looked for sites that explain how. What I got is what a page should have.

i.e a page should say pleasantly the error in plain english, have a way back to your home page (easy enough - use a link), (optional a site map (in FP it creates a separate page - maybe copy the HTML?), optional have a form that sends me an email that an error occurred that would automatically put the referring page (in the case of backlinks) and the page they were looking for and would ask for their email so I could get back with them.

These are all great ideas and I would probably incorporate them all. but here is my problem...

my website uses shared boarders (Top / Left / Bottom) where the Top navigation bar is children of Home and the Left is Parent/Children of Current) [I am working on an option Yahoo! offers an addon as a pulldown menu which may quash this problem, but hrer is the thing, when creating the error page the standard "insert this page into the web for navigation to work" message in both places appeares.

I want the navigation for the site to be there but i do not want to add the e404,html into the web because that is just plain stupid for people to see your error pages in the navigation bar when it shouldn't be there.

any suggestions? or is there a way to add a page to the navtree and then Hide it from showing up on the nav bars?

Thanks

ps.s if you click these sites (CA) is up and running and is being redesigned but will look similar when uploaded with the new pages, the other I haven't built yet and would have the same question.

I don't have 2k on my machine any more so I can't test it but you should be able to tell it not to add it to the navigation, or if it does add it then remove it.

Not sure though if Publish will then put it up on the web.

You could just create the pages and use your control panel file manager to upload them (if you have one) or FTP them up there but then you'll probably have to reset your FPSEs as FTP can corrupt them.

thanks for trying but I dont think you understood the problem. The problem is not uploading it or making the page, it is getting the FP navigation to show up on the page without having the error page show up on the rest of the navigation on all pages of the site.

FP when you add a page to the web (and put it where you want it in the tree, will add the page name to all the pages so I would get:

[Home] [Notary Services] [Associates Pages]...[Error Code 404 - Page not Found]

THat would look Crappy and unprofessional, but there is the option of having it in the tree but not on any navigation bars but then the navigation would not show up on the error page either and that won't work either.

Thanks anyways
