Weird.

Last night I was listening to my mate's internet radio station and suddenly it all went quiet. Nothing odd there as it happens if they get too many listeners. So I rang him and he said it should be fine as he's increased bandwidth.

So I start checking my machine and find the volume slider is down on zero. DOH! moment. Slide it back up and carry on listening.

Ten minutes later it all goes quiet again. Volume slider back on zero. Huh?

Slide it back up and sit and watch as it slowly descends back to zero. Slide it up, down it goes. Up down, up down.

So I assume that I've got too much open and maybe it's something to do with processor power. Close down everything I have open and it's fine.

This morning, log in and the slider is back to zero. I installed 3 trial bits of software last week. Macromedia Contribute, Domain Analyser and DivX. Virus scanned all 3 before installing and they all came up clean.

So this morning I've uninstalled all 3 programs, then run virus checker, adware and trojan scans. No viruses but one of those 3 installed 57 trojans. I have no idea which and I'm not reinstalling to find out. Cleaned everything up and so far the slider has stayed put.

So people be aware that even if you check stuff before installing, it's probably a good idea to run a trojan checker through immediately after installing too.

Not that I'm paranoid or anything (I already had AVG Free, No Adaware, Spybot S & D and SpywareBlaster, as well as Bit Defender Internet Security [:D]), but following recent problems with my laptop with it myseriously slowing to a crawl and everything going into the "not responding" state (including Task Manager when I was trying to close everything down to get out of it), I installed a trial of Ewido over the weekend and TrojanHunter. Not found any nasties (and after defragging and various other bits and pieces I think the mysterious slowing was caused by AVG not quite sure why, because I'd got the same setup on Diva and no problems there, and this is a recent thing with the laptop - but uninstalled it to see what happens, and no mysterious slow-downs since). Nothing major, but Ewido's picked up various bits of adware that the others have missed though.

Ahem, confession time. Yes there were a load of trojans installed but they weren't causing the weird slider creep on the volume control.

It only took me 3 hours and many fruitless searches of the web before my poor frazzled brain had one of those DOH! moments. [sm=icon_redface.gif]

I admitted it in the hope it might help someone else who was searching for the answer and yes, I found quite a few on my hunt around the web, nobody ever answered them. So, being the kind person I am..... here's the full research:

There seem to be 3 possibilities.

1. There is a known issue with a driver on Windows 2000 that requires going into the registry to fix it. This is listed in the Microsoft Knowlegebase.

2. There is a problem with an HP laptop where with age, the keyboard sags and the volume control button is permanently in contact. The solution to this seemed to be to open up the case and shove a piece of thin card between the key and the contact.

3. Your volume control on your Skype (other brands are available) headset has got wedged down the side of your desk so the button is permanently pushed in.

and now there seems to be a 4th scenario........
If like Womble you spend vast amounts of time spraying your mouthful of coffee all over your keyboard eventually things will get stuck down. [;)]
