johnnw -> FTP problems 425 connection message (8/22/2006 18:47:58)

Hi, I maintain three web sites in Front Page 2003. I publish all three of them from within Front Page rather than using an FTP service , but while one is to a http: address, the other two are to an ftp: address.

In the last few days I have been unable to publish either of the two sites that go to a ftp: address. I keep getting a "425 could not open data connection... connection timed out". The site that goes to a http: address still publishes fine.

I've read stuff on the web that suggests such a problem is to do with FP extensions having to be uninstalled/reinstalled, or that it's to do with a firewall on my PC. I have changed absolutely nothing (knowingly) to my PC security settings, but yet I can't believe that two different web hosts would foul up their extensions stuff simultaneously.

I've also read stuff about enabling port 2083 in relation to this problem. I'm afraid this means very little to my simple brain, can anyone tell me how to do this? :))

I have to admit to not being an expert on FTP issues, but it is really frustrating me that two of my three sites have suddenly become un-updateable. Can any kind soul out there offer a crumb of advice?

Thank you :))

have you tried using a dedicated FTP client or ftp from the command line? If you're on XP I can recommend FileZilla, or on the mac you can use Cyberduck - both are free.

If you use FTP that will break the extensions, although I'm not sure what happens when FP2003 uses FTP, perhaps it somehow preserves them???

The other thing to do is disable the OS firewall and disable the router firewall and see what happens. You could also try FTPing some files from a public FTP site, just to check whether you can't use FTP anywhere or it's just your 2 sites.
