Password protected sub site when hosted on Godaddy.

I just want to share my finding about password protected sub sites on Godaddy; (after days of trying to get it to work.)
In order to set up new user names and passwords; you have to have your hosting on their Linux server, NOT the Windows server! If the hosting is on the Windows server, it will tell you that you reached your quota of users.

So this how I got it to work:
1. Set up your hosting account on their Linux server.
2. Turn on FrontPage extensions on the hosting account.
3. Set up a sub-web in their hosting account, placing it in it’s own directory (/subname)
4. Create your sub-webpage(s) in FrontPage just like any independent new website, with it’s own index file etc, etc.
5. Publish it to the sub web (http://www.yourdomain.com/subname)
6. Close FrontPage, re-open, but this time insert your web-address (http://www.yourdomain.com/subname) in the box for Site Name. (You are now on the server).
7. Click Tools->Server->Permissions… A window will open in your browser
8. Click : Change anonymous access settings and set on Off. (click Submit, then Administration on the top of the screen)
9. Click: Change subweb permissions and set to “Use unique permissions for this Web site “.Click Submit, then Administration on the top of the screen).

10. Click Manage Users: Add a user. Give user name and password. Check box : “Browser – view pages and documents” .

I do some business with godaddy. Unfortunately, because of customer demands I must work on a fully Windows platform, thus not allowing me to assign different FTP username and passwords to my clients.

If anyone has a tip as to how to go around this or about a hosting company that allows it while using Wnidows, I'd appreciatte it

All I can say is that 1&1 does NOT work. They will not allow you to set the user name for the sub directory. They give you an impossible user name that you can not remember or expect anyone to use without copy and paste.

thanks Catrine
