Anyone here design logos or has a program to make a bet... - 8/25/2006 20:00:25
Hi there,

I am working on two logos. One for my hobby web site and the other for my business web site.

I already know how I want them to look like. But I do not have the software to put it together right. I am going to go ahead and put them together with the front page 2003 program.

Now here is my question. When I am done putting them together, would anyone be willing to clean them up? Meaning to make them look more 3D or with shadows. Maybe you can refer me to a web site that can do this for me. Any input would help out.

I know it cost a lot of money, to have someone make a logo for you. But I will already have it put together. Now will this save me some money or not pay any money at all?

Thank you

Hi Tony,

I was recently trying to re-do a logo for a site (the original logo was done in WordArt :)) and I couldn't get the anti-aliasing to work right to go on a transparent background in PSP, and after a long time googling I eventually found AAA Logo which has more logo objects and templates than you can shake a stick at, and add shadows, re-colour, resize etc. You can export in all the usual formats - the only problem is you can't do transparent backgrounds, so you then need to import it into a graphics app if you want a transparent background, but I think that's a minor inconvenience given the price.

A couple of weeks ago I spent an hour with a client 'ooohing' and 'aahhing' over the lovely combinations we came up with - all the objects in there are re-colourable, moveable, resizable etc. - she was so impressed I could do all these clever things with the image she wanted - I didn't like to tell her it was the software doing the hard work! :)

You can import objects into it, but you can't resize/recolour etc. imported images so I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but it may be worth a look. They do a trial version of it and the full version's only $49.95, which I thought was pretty good.

:)

Here is a picture of my business logo. As you can see, it needs a lot of work.

Womble, thank you for your reply. But I am very low on funds right now. I was hopping that someone could take this picture idea and clean up the colors and thinkness.

Here is what I could not fix in this picture.

1) When I turn this to a jpg file, the joining together got fuzzy. I Need the joining together to look more sharper and maybe have a 3D look to it.

2) The ".net" needs to be the same shape and size as the "joining together". I could not do this, because I would had to make the triangle bigger. But when I made that bigger, I had to make the joining together bigger too. So that it would go up and then down with the top of the triangle.

3) The grey color triangle does not look right. Not sure what color I should go with. I think it should match more with my wording on the bottom.

4) I do not want the stick figures. We need to get some meat on them. But stay with the three people and the same colors.

I am up for some ideas and for sure I need someone to help put this together. I like the thickness of the "joining together". Just need to get the ".net" the same and the people thicker too. So that it will match better.

I just did this joiningtogether.net domain name. I think the domain name will work in a day or two from now (8-25-06).

I hope someone can help me out.

Thank you
Tony

something like this?

the joining together is too small to make it look 3d and i'm not so sure about the drop shadow i've used - it looks clearer without though a bit a plainer ;)

3) The grey color triangle does not look right. Not sure what color I should go with. I think it should match more with my wording on the bottom.

It doesn't look right because it has a different style from the rest of the logo. I'd say it's either unnecessary or should be less cold and geometric (to better fit the vibrant design). The color seems to be OK, grey is very neutral and goes easily with almost anything.

I think it's safe to remove the grey line completely.

4) I do not want the stick figures. We need to get some meat on them. But stay with the three people and the same colors.

Maybe something along the lines of MSN Messenger logo or the EXIT sign? Stick figures are not good in logos because they're too thin and are difficult to see when the logo is shrinked or viewed from a distance.

I am up for some ideas...

The Arial text “JOINING TOGETHER” is distorted and the letterforms are forced to follow the grey line. You would be better off with baseline shift rather than letter torture. I also heartily recommend using something like Univers or Trade Gothic.

The reason for the high cost of logo design is that the better corporate identity you build, the more you get back through increased productivity. In other words, good design makes you more money.

By the way, I recently heard about a public sector logo redesign which cost $200,000 to improve a couple lines and the colors of a vector logo (the price includes new signage and other costs).

Dave, you are quick on helping me again. I like the "Joining Together" and the ".net".

Now if I was using stick figures, I would go with what you put together. Because that looks a lot better than mine. But in my post, I do not want stick figures. I just put them up there, to give you guys a idea on the format. I do not have the software to make the people I have in mind.

As for that triangle, Anderskorte might have a good idea on just having a baseline. Have to put that together and see how that will look.

Anderskorte, that is a some good advise. But I was hopping to see some one put that advice in shape. Like dave did.

If I had the right software, I would have already done most of what you said. I even said it in my post "I do not want the stick figures".

Seventh, here are my needs in these posts.

Here is what is left to do.

1) We need three people's whole body, hold up their arms. Looking like they all are holding up something together.

2) Do we just have a baseline and not a triangle? I like the idea of hold up the saying "joiningtogether.net". Now what shape do we put this saying in?

Thank You
Tony

I like the stick people. Real people don't tend to come in shades of yellow, orange and green.

how about if you had the 'joining together' in an arch?
i like the stick people, especially as they're a heck of a lot easier to draw! ;)

I am not talking real people. Yes, I agree with you dave, stick people are easier to draw. That is why I put up stick people. So you guys think the stick people are fine? I like the ones dave put together. Should we try to put a smily face on them and stay with the stick people look?

Yes, I want to stay with the orange, yellow and green on the bodies. As for a arch, it is already in a arch, right? I like how the "Joining Together" and the ".net" is setup. Now should we have a triangle or a baseline to go with it?

I just want it to look like they are holding up the Joining Together wording.

Maybe we could take out the triangle and move the ".net" up under the "joining together" more. So that, the bottom of the ".net" lines up with the bottom of the "J" in joining and the "R" in together.

Now should we have a line between the people's hands and the "Joining Together" or keep it blank between them?

Thank you,
Tony
P.S. I have to go for the day with my family now. I will check back later with you guys.

What MrBone needs to do right now is develop a concept, to decide what the logo and the company are trying to communicate. We know nothing about the company, so we also have no idea what the logo should be like.

What I really meant with the baseline shift is that the text should be on a curve. Basically the same as Photoshop's “Warp Text” feature. It means that the letters are positioned on a custom baseline, but the letterforms are not bended, skewed or harmed otherwise.

Here's a rough sketch of how a baseline curve would look like (sorry I didn't have a good font for it, this one is called Clearface Gothic).

And guys, please, why Arial? This is a professional logo, so type has a central role. If you use something as common as Arial, there should at least be good reasons for it.

The arch would work, yes, but the shadows and gradients are a little too much (over-decoration) and the people figures need refinement. (And then the Arial... :))

Forgive me, MrBone, but from what I have read, you've put a list of how you want the logo to look, and not how the logo needs to look. Unfortunately, the three stick figures has been forced into cliche status. Is that how you want to be remembered? If so, you've already got what you need. If not, think long and hard about Anderskorte's evaluation.

Hey, it's just my opinion. I just think you deserve more for what you're trying to achieve according to the information I've read on your site.

Good luck.:)

Sorry about not telling you the whole story about my web site. Here is the deal. I change my domain name. Because the domain name I have right now, does not fit my web site, as well as my new domain name does.

Here is my old and new domain name.

Old: www.nicepeoplehere.com

New: www.joiningtogether.net

Right now, I am waiting for the joining together name to be active. Then I will put my nicepeoplehere.com web site on that domain. But I would have to redo a lot of the wording first.

Go to www.nicepeoplehere.com and that will show you what I need this logo for.

I like the ideas you guys are coming up with. I know see what you mean by a arch. My bad.

I am going to make a attempt, to put your ideas together, to make the logo I am thinking of.

Tony

Don't get me wrong, the idea wasn't bad. The JOINING TOGETHER text can look like a sign. The script font is a better alternative for the Arial italics in the original. It just needs tweaking and refinement, as does my proposal.

Anderskorte, I like the colors and the people you put together. But I am not sure how you put them together. Would it be to much to ask, to have you change their arms to look like this?

:)
I was able to do it, but it gets fuzzy every time I turn it to a jpg file. Again if I had the right software, I would do this myself.

If you take the time to do this for me, could you make their hands touch each other a little. Just like the stick guys up top.

Right now, it looks like the cops told the people to put their hands up.

I do like the arch look. But I like having color in the "Joining together".

Here is what I put together. AGIAN my software is making it look fuzzy again. I just need this picture below to be sharper and the people's arm up the way I just said in this post. Do not worry about a 3D look and shadows. Because the people are not in 3D or has shadows.

I know I said I wanted 3D look in my last posts. But I know under stand how everything in the logo should be setup the same, to look right.

:)

Anderskorte, your logo seems to be the closes to this logo. Would you be so kind, to clean this logo up for me?

All your guys input and help means a LOT to me. THANK YOU SO MUCH! You guys are saving me a LOT of money.

Thank you
Tony

tony if you save your logo as a gif it should come out a lot cleaner than you have it - jpegs are fine for photos and images with gradients but for logos and other images with fewer than 256 colours in lines or blocks (and text) gif is usually alot better

also what graphics progam are you using?

Dave, you are right about the gif file. Now it is not so fuzzy. Thank you for the tip.

Anderskorte, let me know if you are going to put this together or not. If not, then I will see what I can do with what dave told me about the gif file.

Anderskorte, I am asking for your help first, because you already have the people and colors of them. I am just not sure how hard it will be for you to put them arms up. I do not want to ask to much from you guys on here. Just let me know, when I am stepping over the line. Then I will do what I can to put it together on my own.

Dave, to answer your questions. Here is how I been doing all of this work.

First I start off with front Page 2003. I use this to do the lettering and the shapes.

Then I click the "print screen button" on the keyboard. Now I open up the paint programe and click paste. Then I crop out the image I made on front page.

Now I copy that image and paste it to "Abode photo Deluxe Business edition 1.0". This program is for win 98. But it is kinda working on win 2000, with some errors.

Now that the image is in adobe, I copy the colors from my shape I made and put it in the lettering color. BUT when I do this, it makes the lettering thinker. This is why I would like someone to touch up this logo. Then I save it as a jpg file.

Tony

You're welcome! Still, the money you save is not the money you pay someone to draw the logo. It's the design that costs. And usually a lot.

Depending on what graphics program you're using, we can give you hints how to rotate the forms to make the hands look the way you want them. I don't have the original file anymore, I just drew it quickly and posted here, it was very rough and quick (< 5 minutes).

You must draw the final logo yourself either in a vector drawing program (Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, QuarkXPress etc.) or a regular raster graphics program, but in a very high resolution. You don't need my lo-res GIF file. It's too small and unrefined for any use.

So, you ditched Arial, too. The current logo is in Helvetica. Nice otherwise, but Arial is a Helvetica copy.

Anyway, I'll clean my hands from the font issue now. :)

Now that is what I am talking about!!

Dave, Thanks again for taking the time to help me out. I am very happy with this logo.

Again, I like to thank everyone else for their input and help.

I got the logo I want and learn some things from you guys. You guys are awesome on here.

I will give you guys a week off. Because I now have a hobby logo, I am trying to put together. This one is going to be harder to put together.

When I put it together, I will go ahead and post it on here. Then maybe you guys can give me your input or help.

Thank you,
Tony

I think Arial isn't too bad here. It doesn't scream the usual “I'm too lazy to reach the font menu” in this logo.

You're sure you don't need a hi-res version? It's only for a website, and not used in any printed material? In that case, the logo is great as it is now.

Tony, for your hobby logo can I suggest you download a copy of The Gimp and use the help menu to learn your way round. There are also tutorials on the web if you google for them.

The Gimp is a full blown graphics package and the best bit from your point of view is it's free.
