Any free maps for using on website? - 8/27/2006 22:18:49
Does anyone know where I can obtain a map that I can freely use on a website? For Queensland, Australia, but would prefer to show some street detail for town of Emerald.

Thanks for any advice.
Regards

Are you talking about pics or interactive maps (i.e., Yahoo Maps, Google Maps.)?

It's easier to link to something like multimap or google. Visitors can then zoom in and out on the area they want.

Static maps, as Tail and I found out, you end up drawing them yourself or paying a lot of money to buy a license.

Jaybee you've now convinced me.

Multimaps is particularly good for Australian sites because the map of Australia seems to appear 1st, being 1st in their countries alphabet. Also I now see that googlemaps.com.au, rather than .com also allows me to see Australia 1st.

Many thanks.

Hang on, Australia being first shouldn't matter.

Put a search in multimap for the place you want. Zoom in to what you want. Then copy the link in the address bar and use that as a hyperlink in your site.

When the user clicks on it it'll take them straight to the map you zoomed in to. They then have the choice of zooming out to see the major roads coming in to the area if they're not local.

For example:

Windsor Castle
