i have a IBM thinkpad 600 -lol its old 233mhz cpu but im running windows 2000 pro and i had downloaded a program and doulbe click the exe. file and the file just dissapeared - it was nowhere to be found i did a serch for it on my laptop and nothing came up, then i ctrl+alt+del'ed and it just started lagging like creazy and task manager came up after a couple of minutes but it wasnt responding so i turned my laptop off and back on the whole bootup process went fine until the window that tells you to login never came up so i left it there over night and still no login window i think it was like 14 hours it sat like that so im wondering what it could be i searched the net but since i dont know if its a virus or what i couldnt find much , maybe its a MBR virus , plz help, oh and i cant go into safe mode if i try to is says missing boot sector or something similar, i cant do a restore because i had lowered the amount of space it can use to a minimum because i only have a 4gig hdd 4 it so that doesnt work plz help

Welcome to Outfront and Oh Dear. It sounds very much like you downloaded a virus or something totally incompatible with your machine.

As you can't get in by normal methods the only thing I can think of is to use a boot disk, you do have one? Make sure it's not writeable.

If possible use a friend's computer to get hold of an up to date viruschecker and stick that on disk, make it non-writeable, then run it through.

If none of that works then you may have to reformat and reinstall.

For future reference, never run a downloaded exe file without virus checking it first and make sure the virus signatures are up to date before you do.

well i think i found out what the virus was because i downloded the file o my pc and ran a virus check on it on its call backdoor.agent.TN
idk what kind it is or how bad it is

Doesn't look like it does much damage. Either there's something else or what you tried to install wasn't right for your machine. What was it?

well i actually downloaded 2 things and both exe's disapeared, but is it possible for the exe file to extract itself unknown to the user after it is downloded cuz my pc says it blocked it

i guess both files i d/l were the same viruses and bitdefender said they were called Backdoor.Agent.TN but i couldnt find it on their site
