bobburk -> transferring programs to new computer (9/3/2006 20:55:09)

I just bought a new laptop to replace my old desktop. I have Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003 installed on my desktop and want to remove it and place it on the new laptop. Since I only get three installs, and I don't need it on both computers, I want to move it. I know there is a way but I couldn't find the instructions on how to do it. Can someone help me or point me to where to find the instructions?

You're somewhat confused...

MS allows 3 concurrent installations for the student version. NOT just 3 installs of the product.

- right from Microsoft -
"You can install this product on up to three computers or devices in your household."

Just grab the installation CD and install it on your new computer.

Yes, I am confused. If that's the case, I can install it on several different computers (not that I want to) but how does Microsoft know how many computers it is concurrently installed on? I only want to use it on 3 but if I don't uninstall it on one of the current computers, doesn't it look to the Microsoft registration like it is on 4 computers?

Installing on more than 3 computers:::

I believe that you'll see the following scenario:

You'll install the product on one computer, you'll "activate" it online...things will go smooth...

You'll repeat the same thing on 2 other computers...

Once you get to #4, you'll have an issue activating it.

MS will suggest that you contact them in order to activate your computer.

When you call MS, they'll ask you point blank...if the software is installed on any other computers..and how many installations....

when you tell them 3 others...they will explain what you already know...only 3 seats allowed

If you lie...and tell them that it's only on 1 computer, they will eventually give you the info you need to activate the program...

Just a note....you can activate the program without issues about every 3-4 months. (such as if you have to re-do the computer...you can re-install the program and activate it with no issues...)

They understand that people buy new computers, and have issues with things...

Hope that helps..
