help on a sale - 9/6/2006 13:45:33
Hi guys

an existing customer of mine is almost sold on upgrading his website. When I created it, the site was one specific idea. As we all know, thanks to customer's interference and after two years of updates, changes, etc, the site is a little patched up. It wouldn't pass a W3C validation in any way. (not that it matters to the customer but it matters to me)

I re-designed a new, more modern and W3C compliant example for their site.

here's the deal:

Although the customer and I have talked about an obvious payment for the upgrade, I want to have more elements than just saying the site is standard compliant, looks nicer, will allow for faster updates, etc I need the extra sales pitch just in case the customer asks me "and why do I really need an upgrade?"

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

If it's standards compliant it's more likely to be cross-browser compatible - less complaints from his customers that they can't see it properly. Are you using any accessibility techniques at all? If so, give him the disability discrimination legislation chat, and I've posted the figures quoted at the recent talk on accessibility that Tail and I went to.

Of course then there's the "SEs like fresh content", better for search rankings angle, and the fact that customers tend to come back if there's something fresh to look at.

Dear Womble

as usual, just like a lady in shining armor, you come to my rescue!

I appreciatte your suggestions very much (and am using them)

One question: where could I see the figures you and Tail posted?

Ooops! I forgot to say didn't I? :)

They're over in the accessibility forum, in the "pragmatic accessibility" thread.

You could also point out that the soon to be released IE7 will require more in terms of valid code than previous versions. Whatever you do do not point to Web 2.0

:)

Hi Caz and thanks! I just added it to my proposal and emailed it 2 minutes ago

So you feel Web 2.0 is for real or just a scam? I was puzzled by your suggestion to not point to Web 2.0

Just use the link I gave to an item regarding Tim Berners-Lee's views on Web 2, ie. like the "emperor's clothes". :) It's not my view, in fact I don't have any on this topic except that a lot of people are hyping it up.
