What is "inverted index file" in FP 2003? - 9/6/2006 21:22:39
I am trying to use the Search Page that is available as a Template.

I've used it before and it worked. But I deleted it because it was finding so many unwanted files.

When I installed it again, it installs ok, but when I search with it, I get this message:

"Error from search: 2can't open the inverted index file /home/campinga/public_html/_vti_txt/default.wti/All.inv"

I wonder if this might have something to do with it... I still have a lot of "garbage" files that should have been deleted from the server.

When I publish to the server after deleting a page on my own hard disk, FrontPage usually asks if I want to delete it from the "remote site", but either it doesn't go ahead and delete the file or maybe it doesn't always ask.

Because... for some reason, "deleted" files are still there.

I know how to delete them, but am hesitant to "mess around" on the server for fear of doing something wrong.

When I first started, I had everything messed up so badly that I decided to delete everything and start over... and it took me days to get back to square one.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks much,

CJ

Can you open the live site in FP, then run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks ?

Thanks for the response, Spooky!

Yes, I was able to open my site on the server (that's what you meant to do, right?), and select Recalculate Hyperlinks.

I thought it was working, so didn't sit in front of the computer and watch, but when I came back there was a long list just as there is if I run it on my hard disk, but there was a message that it could not save, and suggested that maybe my server was temporarily out of service.

I waited a while and tried again. This time I watched, and it seemed to work normally, until it came to one of the "unlinked" files, and there progress stopped. It just sat there with the hour glass displayed for several minutes, until I finally stopped it.

So... although I've had no problems with publishing on this server, it looks like FP can't work on it "live". Maybe that would also explain why "deleted" files are piling up there.

Do you think I need to talk with my host provider about this or is it possible I've got something set wrong in FP?

Thanks again,

CJ

I would try the same thing locally and then check that the server extensions are reinstalled on the host before trying a republish?
