Is someone stealing my content? - 9/8/2006 19:24:31
I’m wondering whether anyone who understands web stats and particularly the motivations of some people who are repeatedly returning to my site using a particular key phrase can help me?

I’ve designed a site for a client who, as yet hasn’t begun using their site, they haven’t given the address to anybody and in fact the noindex, nofollow meta tags are still in place, as is the robots txt file.

Of all the hits I get to my site via search engines, over a third are presently for this particular client’s name, the client is located in the US, yet from my research through Google Analytics, the people/person searching on my client’s name are located within Australia. It’s difficult to narrow it down any further, but I’m pretty sure they are in Sydney. I’ve checked to see whether my client shares a name with anyone in Australia, they probably do, but I can’t find any reference to a person sharing the same name from Australia.

I informed my client more just out of curiosity I suppose, but he is of the opinion that a competitor is stealing either content or the design from his site, whereas I tend not to believe that as they are repeatedly going through my site to get to the client’s (the link on my portfolio page and subsequent case study is the only link to this site online).

Surely if they were stealing my client’s content or design they wouldn’t keep going through the link on my site? Also if it’s a competitor located close to my client in the US, it just doesn’t stack up that they are seemingly using an Australian ISP based in Sydney. Or does it?

Any thoughts on what might be going on would be greatly appreciated.

Nicole

If you're worried about content theft, pick a line from the site, preferably five or six words together that are unusual,

paste them into google search with " round them.

Thanks Jaybee,

I've tried that and the few snippets I searched didn't show up. It could be a site under construction though.

I've just gone back to the stats, and since I last looked I've had two more hits, one from Ukraine and one from Australia, Normanhurst in Sydney actually. Their ISP seems to be Internode which coincidentally happens to be the same as mine. I was wondering if somehow it was me, or this computer, but I'm not visiting my site's opening page, then clicking portfolio and then clicking on this case study.

It could also be a search engine crawler. There are loads of others apart from Google, MSN et al.

If it's a crawler you can usually tell by the speed that they will request pages, like 10 pages in a second.

If it's you then do the stats only occur when you are awake and have the pc switched on? Perhaps you sleep walk and sleep crawl?!:)

Not all bots request like the last post suggests.

Look at your raw logs on your last question Nicole. Hit the web site, pick any page. then dopwnload the raw log file immediatly after. Your ip will bind to teh page name request. This will give the IP that you are using.

If you serached as JB mentioned then you are clear. I do this pretty regular to catch those pesky thieves.

Take care,

Brian

You might also take a look at CopyScape as well

content can be traced by using search engines, ie gooling copyscape etc but it woud be really hard to spot stolen design/layout.
