Low signal strenth - 9/10/2006 10:46:41
Hi folks,

I finally broke down and bought a laptop last weekend... Our 7 year old was hogging Dad's computer (OK, that was my excuse!) Toshiba Satellite A105-S4114.

I have found that our signal strength is not good in different parts of the house and am wondering if I should purchase a repeater to boost the strength? Is there another solution?

Thanks as always!

Nick

You could also consider using the house wiring to extend the range of the signal with these.

I haven't used them yet, but am certainly considering it for use in the summer house at the bottom of the garden.

I had excellent luck at my house using just an upgraded antennae. This is the one I had but just be sure it will work with the protocol. This one is 'g' but most new laptops support that.

Hi Folks,

While I thought I was dealing with 'low signal' problems, when I moved the laptop into the office with an 'excellent signal' my web pages were still taking minutes to load if they would load at all.

Finally, I unplugged my 'Trendnet' router and plugged back in and I am back in the world of broadband. Go figure.

I will look at the options for increasing signal strength as my pool is about 110 feet from the house. It would be cool to be sucking on a Pepsi poolside with the laptop screaming. :)

Another question, in my investigation of the issue I was having, one of the things I read was the problems with a 2.4ghz phone system and the wireless since it also uses the same frequency. We love our old AT&T phone system (if it ain't broke, don't fix it), but has this caused problems for any of you?

Thanks as always!

Nick

I have absolutely no sympathy with either of you.

Ignore these peasants Nick, they are just envious. :)

With the phone, is it situated near the router? You can change channels on the router if there is a conflict with that of the phone, or vice versa maybe. I think that I saw that advice on the Netgear site.

Hi Caz,

The main phone is in the kitchen, but I had one of the handsets and chargers in the office with the router. I went ahead and moved it out of the room just in case. Will monitor...
