Layout selectors / inspiration? - 9/11/2006 3:24:10
I already have color schemers one for each finger, but has anyone come across a layout generator for websites?

I don't mean a code generator, but something similar to the Behr color schemer, maybe something inspiration-based.

Ideas?

Anders,

I often browse the W3C Sites site: http://www.w3csites.com/

Also, although i keep forgetting to do it myself, I've heard others suggesting browsing template sites.

For layout inspirations, I often look at crazy sites like this.

W3C Sites is nice, but many of those sites have the problem that the example sites have been selected only because 1) they comply to the standards and 2) they simply “look good”. The meaning and client's wishes gets lost somewhere in the process when I look at nicely decorated sites. The outcome is then nothing more than a decorated and bland presentation. It's nice though, decoration is also very important.

I don't know if there are such things as layout generators or website layout selectors. It's pretty hard to build that kind of software.

There are methods for layout design in the print design world, but websites are always a chapter of their own.

I find layout design the most difficult task. How to come up with the right layout with the right amount of dynamism? After all, I'm someone with no design education or background. Still I'm interested in catching the viewer's attention and creating a good eye flow, that's what I get paid for.

Well it all depends on the type of client you have. I'm struggling at the moment as two clients require full screen width sites and I always find them harder to be imaginative with for some reason. With a centered fixed width you have a lot of scope I find to decorate the outer page with something snazzy!

Inspiration comes from many areas though. I've related my toothbrush colour scheme inspiration once before but I also get inspiration from album covers, wine bottle labels etc.

Yes, as crazy as it sounds, that's how it goes.

As you can see from my avatar, I was once inspired by the TV test pattern and the color test sheets on newspapers. It wasn't a website but a little design hobby thing I had. But I like it when it has a purpose. The TV test pattern bears a certain peculiar message for people—a horribly ugly screen you get when you happen to wake up in the middle of the night, have trouble getting asleep and open up the TV.

Once a color scheme was inspired by Munch's Madonna I saw at WebMuseum (what a wonderful website for art history).

I know it's a bit passe, but the Zen Garden is an everchanging source of inspiration.
