Sharing Internet Connection Wirelessly - 9/17/2006 17:52:34
I posted several months ago because I could not get my laptop to print over my wireless network. Recently, I changed from a cable connection to DSL. When I did, my laptop lost the ability to connect to the internet over the wireless network. I have been messing with it for hours to no avail. I reinstalled the wireless router (netgear). What makes me laugh is I am now able to print after months of failing at getting that to work. So, obviously the laptop sees the desktop to which the printer is connected. Just need some tips on how to get the internet access restored.

Duanne,
This will be sophomoric for you I am sure, but once I was having trouble connecting a computer to the wireless system and it was because I was Mac filtering and couldn't read my own writing and had entered the Mac address wrong...
So first, have you disabled all your wireless security and tried? What message are you getting when you try to connect? Does the laptop see the wireless system and you can't connect or does it not even see the wireless sytem?

I am doing MAC filtering as well, but didn't have to type the address, the router determined it on its own. The laptop can see the shared directories on my desktop so yes, it sees the wireless system. I just realized that my laptop's clock was off a day and since I knew that can be a problem thought for sure that would be it, but sadly, no cigar.
Disabling all security didn't help any either.

Duane,
My last thought, every now and then I am just plain unable to connect my laptop to the system. I unplug the router and plug back in and then I am good to go... Actually, this has only happened since I put WPA2 security in play, but dang it's worth a shot...
I will be silent and let the big boys help ya now... Watching from the bench...

I think I see a problem. Not sure if its the problem, but a problem nonetheless. The internet port on the router and the laptop have been assigned the same IP address. However, I have no idea how to remedy this.

OK. Got that. Took a minute to figure out how to find the DNS IP addresses. Anyway, that seems to have been it. My children thank y'all for the help as they are prohibited from using my machine since the time I ran a spyware scan and found about 150 items. "But, Dad . . . It said I had won a free Ipod!"

OK Spooky/Duane how does one figure out what IP address you would add? Is it always based on your particular router? Do different routers use different IP Addresses?

When I first set up the router, there was no conflict. The machines and the router all were assigned unique IPs, but something went awry when I switched to DSL and the router and my laptop ended up with the same IP. I just assigned the next available one. For example, the desktop PC was XXX.168.0.2. The router was XXX.168.0.3 so I assigned the laptop XXX.168.0.4.
However, I spoke too soon about this resolving the problem. I am beginning to wonder if the router itself or my wireless card has gone bad. If I reboot the laptop, it connects for a few minutes, but shortly after loses the connection and won't reconnect until rebooted again.
