I need reassurance... - 9/18/2006 17:14:43
Please critique my site: http://designbyseanmcgee.com. I've shown it to friends and family, but I just want the opinions of other professionals. ESPECIALLY the negative opinions. Please let me know. **EDIT** It's one thing to have compliant code, but I just want other's impressions. Thanks

Larry, Let me show you my old site: http://designbyseanmcgee.com/Documents/style2.html (Bear in mind there probably are some broken links since the re-design) It didn't work in FF, I had default text in some places, etc. To me it was kind of....blah. I wanted something standards compliant and accessible. Flash isn't. I don't know. I guess it really just needs more content. Thanks for the comment. Sean

Welcome to Outfront Sean, It's neatly laid out and that quote that larry has in his response, you say "both" and then you list 3 things. I was always of the understanding that both meant there were 2 things? The things that struck me first off though were both the colour scheme, the font, the way the site seems to be "all boxed in" with thick black lines and some of the wording. If I were designing a black and orange website, I think I'd be trying to subdue the black a bit, perhaps even as grey as #444 and I'd also tone down the orange too. Likewise I "think" I'd change the font, but not really sure about that, but I also thing it shouldn't be black, perhaps something like #444 again. The wording: Well, you've said "links to selected works" which is what we all have in our portfolios, but I'm not sure saying "selected" doesn't give the impression that they're only the good ones, or in fact the only good ones. Oh, and the other thing I noticed was ther there was no obviousity that anything was a link. Perhaps you should make them underline on hover? Nicole

Thanks y'all... Who better to critique your site than other designers? Will take these things into consideration. (Nicole: Well, I have a lot of good things in my portfolio. Unfortunately, I only have 35 megs of space with my hosting provider. In addition, 95% of my portfolio is pure graphic design--advertisments, forms, etc. I'd much rather concentrate on graphic design. As to the color scheme, you're probably right. I checked my statistics, and only 1.923% of the people visiting my site had 800X600 browsers. In the larger resolutions, the black MUST be overwhelming. So thanks for pointing that out for me. -- As to the grammar, sorry I suck. haha)
