Firefox issue - 9/19/2006 15:27:38
This is not a web problem per se but I know there are a number of very smart people here who will use Firefox so perhaps they can help explain this.

I've created a CD-ROM of my catalog. I am testing it now.
The opening page is a simple HTML page.
On the page there are a few graphics and links to PDF chapters of the catalog. No Flash etc.
This disc runs fine in Internet Explorer.

In Firefox, the graphics are not visible and the links to the PDF files are broken.
It looks like the browser does not know to look on the CD-ROM for the associated files. The path doesn't have the cd drive letter in it.

In other words, when I hover over a link or a graphic, Firefox shows the following:

file:///subdirectory/file

In Internet Explorer, I see
file:///K:or what ever the CD-Rom letter is /subdirectory/file

What do I need to do to the HTML code to make this CD run properly in the Mozilla browser?

Double check your links.

Try specifying the root as / or /index.htm

I found if I removed the "/" at the beginning, it worked in both browsers.

What is the difference between these three paths?

pdf/myfile.pdf

/pdf/myfile.pdf

./pdf/myfile.pdf (note the period in front of the "/")

I want my CD to work with as many operating systems and browsers as possible.

I've noticed that the second example is not compatible with Firefox. Internet Explorer can use either the first or second example. Someone in Germany told me the preferred syntax is the third example. Do you know anything about the leading "."?

The best one to use is the one that works.

Here's a short tutorial

Thanks, Jaybee
The tricky part is this is not a web site but a CD=Rom.
But I think I understand better now, absolutely, in a relative way.

Rick

Open FF first, then go File>Open navigate to the index on your CDRom, that way you know for sure FF knows where to go. If it's still having problems then the way you've specified your links is absolutely your problem, relatively speaking.
