Is it better for SEO if you update pages often?

Someone has told me that search engines may record the date of the file and will ignore pages that aren't updated often. If so, how often is likely to be often enough?

Any views on this?

I'd say that it's definitely better to update your pages reasonably often - otherwise Google seems to get "bored" with the site even though it might have scored well previously. As to how often is enough? No idea - at a complete guess I'd aim to change the content in some way once a month.

If this is a pain then you could look to a more dynamic way of solving it - you could rotate content using PHP or ASP.

I've heard that too, but remember also that a frequently updated site is probably more likely to have visitors returning more often also.

Thanks very much Tailslide and Nicole. Useful tips. Following your advice I've just read the Google Webmaster Help Centre, which states the following:

'Make sure your web server supports the If-Modified-Since HTTP header. This feature allows your web server to tell Google whether your content has changed since we last crawled your site. Supporting this feature saves you bandwidth and overhead.'

I'll have to investigate the meaning of this statement. I'll also have to investigate PHP/ASP.

I know this website has had minimal changes since I did major changes some time ago. It's true that we were getting lots of interest shortly after I made those changes, so perhaps there is a Google 'boredom' factor.

Ask your host. If it's there then Google goes, checks it, if the site hasn't changed, Google goes away. If it has changed, Google spiders the site and uses up bandwidth in the process.

Google boredom factor... absolutely, it's not going to list a site full of out of date information at the top unless it has nothing better.

too quick is bad and too slow is worse. Try to hit the mid. Do not update your pages very frequently. Also do not keep them static for year and years. Website should be like University syllabus- constantly updating at regular interval, not too fast not too slow............

Btw University syllabus usually remain same for an academic year, but SEO changes everyday. However by updating it on regular interval, more likely it will attract on- topics links IMO. Also google examine the context of your incoming links on priority hence only those links that relate to the "specific keyword being searched on" will help you to achieve a higher ranking for that keyword.
