Dial-up needed - 9/25/2006 17:35:29
Not a request for a critique. The client has used a graphic designer and I've been told what to design, full stop, no arguments, this is it.

I'm still working on the site and haven't yet gone through tidying the code or error checking so don't waste your time.

What I need is somebody with dial-up to do page load times for me. I've optimised the graphics as much as I can without losing too much quality but the client is insisting on adding more and more to each page.

I've tried explaining about people with dial-up but he has fast broadband and it just isn't sinking in. I need to be able to give him a figure or, better still, put a load timer on a dummy page and make him sit and wait for it to load.

The page I need timed is here

Thank you my dears.

Weboptimization.com says 28.84 seconds for a 56k modem if that's any help.

Oh Rats is that all. I was hoping for a couple of minutes. He'll think 30 seconds is nothing. :)

About 45 seconds at 56k. The pictures on the right took an age to load.

OK, great thanks Andy I'll tell him it's around a minute already and adding loads more pictures will make people hit the back button.

I've found this to work when someone says something like that.

I start speaking, then.....I wait for that time to pass and then continue. They usually respond with, "What was I waiting for?" And I say, "Exactly. That's what your customers will say while they're buying that product from your competitors."

That usually hits home. :)

They haven't got any competitors. :) I'm just going to doctor the site and set up a page load delay of 50 seconds so when he complains that the site is taking ages to load......

There are always competitors.:)

And the first line on the page confirms it:

53 seconds for me. Tell them that I only wait 4 seconds for a page to load. If it doesn't load in 4 seconds then I am out of there looking at his competitors site.
