behaviour/play on click sound file - 9/27/2006 21:05:07
I've posted this question on "discussions in Expression Web Design" but got no reply. I'd appreciate some help here if possible.

I need help with an "on click" sound file. I've loaded and unloaded it
several times. When I preview it locally, it works as intended. After I
publish it, the first chord of the sound file plays, and then IE6 locks up. FF does nothing on click.

My original file is a cda file. I converted it to a wav file (using an
evaluation version of a converter). Regardless of which file I use, the same
result occurs after publishing.

Bluehost supports FP extensions -
does it need anything else to make this work properly?

Thank you for your help. Linda

I would love to help you but your link doesn't go anywhere. Do you have a valid link I can look at?

Well, first things first.

How big is that .wav file? You might want to convert it into an .mp3. The file will load quicker. Right now it's causing (my) IE browser to refresh everytime I mouseover it. I think this may have something to do with the following code:

<td style="width: 381px" valign="top" class="style7"
onclick="FP_playSound(/*url*/'sound/Track021.wav')"
onmouseover="FP_playSound(/*url*/'sound/Track021.wav')">

I would take out the onmouseover="FP_playSound(/*url*/'sound/Track021.wav') portion and see if that helps.

You also have this in the <head>:

<script type="text/javascript"></script>
<script type="text/javascript"></script>

I would remove it as there's nothing in them. Post back and let us know how it works.

Thanks for pointing out the errors. I think the problem is the sound file itself. As you suggest, the wav file is very large. I was told that the file I was given was an mp3 file, but when I copy it off the disc, it appears as a cda file. I tried converting to WMV which plays locally but does nothing in IE when published. It does not, however, hang up any longer. I'm obviously not up on sound files. Can you tell me how to get the file into MP3, please? It's not an option on the converter I'm using. Thanks. Linda

Actually, you just grab it from here. No need to have you do extra work. :)

No problem. It's what I do.:)

And I'll try to find some converters for you that are free. I just happen to have more professional software for these kinds of things.

It works just as I wanted in IE. Thanks again.

Now for Firefox. Any ideas about what to do with that? No sound there at all :)
