ArkadyGr -> Remote Desktop Web Connection Help Please (9/28/2006 12:06:37)

I know there is a post about a similar problem but my symptomps are a slightly different tahst why a separate post.

Hello all,

Here is my story; I am wanting to RDP to my home computer from my office. However I am behind some sort of a proxy or symantic security software or both. So I figured that is the reason I am unabel to use the Remote Desktop Connection client to connect. So I decided to try Remote Desktop Web Connection, since I am able to browse the Interenet. I have installed all the nesssesarry IIS components on the host XP SP1 Box and forwarded all the needed ports; and I am able to get to my tsweb/Default.htm page. However when I click Connect I get the "The client could not connenct to teh remote computer. ..." message. I tried to enter my computer name into the Server text field and that brings up "Teh specified remote computer could not be found ..." error message. When I try to enter the DHCP IP in the Srver filed (although U shouldnt have to sicne from what I understand I have alredy got through the router) I again get the "The client could not connenct to the remote computer. ..." message.

I might be wrong but my understanding is this problem hasnt to do with my being behind a proxy or a firewall anymore, since I am alredy at my IIS's tsweb/Default.htm page. Unless, maybe once the connection is attmepted and a responce is returend from the host to the clinet ActiveX it is trying to come through some port that teh proxy is bloking. But shouldn't all the trafic come in thtough port 80 on the clinet side, hence Remote Desktop Web Connection. Also teh same symptoms persist when trying to use the Web connection from anotehr computer that I know is not behind a proxy, in fact i even tryied to connect from a computer that is on the same LAN as the host - same results.

Anyway those are my thoughts. Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks for everyon's time

Arkady.

If you are connecting to a computer behind a router, make sure that you have port forwarding setup. In your router config page, you need to set it up so that all requests to port 3389 are forwarded over to the computer that you want to connect to on your network.

this will give you the last part of your IP address (that way you know what IP to forward port 3389 to):
Start>run>cmd>ipconfig/all

Next step is to setup a port forward from within your router. You might just want to call your router's tech support for this.

Also, ensure that all security related stuff like firewalls are disabled while you test this.

What happens when you ping the IP address of the computer you are trying to RD to? Does it time out or do you get a reply?
