CPU won't boot - 9/28/2006 14:10:19
My sisters cpu won't boot up anymore, I haven't seen it, but apparantly they can't get to the f8 screen (xp pro) to do a safe mode....it just continually reboots itself. A backup of the entire hd has been made; however, there are files on there through quicken and a daycare program she has that can't be backed up unless through the program itself. So, I need to get into the hd to start teh programs to back them up. Of course, I can't do that cause it reboots all the time. Is it possible to hook the HD up to another cpu as a slave, boot it up as the normal boot for the good hd, and then maybe start the programs on the other HD? I am assuming we can browse the other hd once its hooked up. Or will loading the program on operating system A with HD B cause a problem?

Probably won't work because registry entries on operating system A and B won't agree.
As a point of information, Quicken files can and should be stored outside the program. Since that isn't the case here, mounting your sister's hard drive as a slave will allow you to identify files on the slave using Operating system A Windows search option.
For Quicken, search for QDF, QEL, IDX, QTX and QPH files. Make sure they all have the same date then copy/paste to a new folder in Operating system A. Assuming you have Quicken installed on Operating system A, browsing for the folder then double clicking the QDF (Data) file should bring-up your sister's work.
If you'll let us know the name of the second (proprietary) program, perhaps someone here can help you recover data from it as well.

Actually, I just spoke with my sister and she has a very recent copy of quicken...so that one is ok. The other program I am talking about is ChildCare Pro. It is an old program that looks like it was written in vb. I am hoping it is so old that it won't need to modify any registry entries.

The constant rebooting of your sister's machine is a strong indication of a corrupted registry. This option may not be open to you. Before "slaving", check HERE first.

Thanks for the help...Jaybee's post has a nice write up on how to repair the problem, and i will try that last. My sister just bought the xp cd and we don't want to open it unless we have to.
I connected teh faulty HD with my HD / CPU and I was able to find her data and view it. It stores it in a microsoft Access database. However, it is unreadable for her as she won't know what it all means. I tried running the program and it said Active X control not found...I looked at the installation log and it modified the registry a bunch. so, I am going to install the program on my machine, copy the files from her machine over, and see if it will recognize the data at all. If not, then I'll try and repair the disk.

Will a windows xp pro upgrade CD be able to boot from logon to the windows xp install menu? I ask this because I think I am going to try and repair the xp installation and we lost the xp pro disk, but have an upgrade one available to us.
