Alan256 -> Revive possibly "corrupted" EWD site? (9/29/2006 2:55:07)

Hi,

I had been successfully publishing my site to the Internet using EWD for two weeks, but now I'm getting errors. For example, "Server error: Site does not support Navigation Structure", or "Server error: The page xxx has been modified by yyy on data ddd", or "Conflicts: Some items have changed on both the local and remote Web sites and are in conflict." Regardless of whether I tell EWD to overwrite the files on the Internet server or not, the error is always there when I try to publish again.

I think this may be related to Dynamic Web Templates, so I had my host (GoDaddy.com) uninstall and reinstall FPSE on their Windows server. That didn't help. Actually my host did not "wipe" my site clean during the FPSE reinstall. Maybe "wiping" would be a good idea? (I have lots of local backups I can re-publish from).

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Alan256

I thought EW didn't use FPSEs which could be why it made no difference.

Don't forget it's still in Beta. Have you been to the bug reports and checked to see if anyone else has had this problem?

You have the choice, going from memory.

Yup, found it here...

Verify you have this enabled. Then I would call the host to repair the extensions (Unless you can from CPanel or whatever you use).

Take care,

Hi jaybee,

As I understand it, in order to get Dynamic Web Templates to work with EW, I must have FrontPage Server Extensions installed on the server. If I didn't care about DWT, then I wouldn't need FPSE.

Yes, the "beta-ness" of EW may be to blame.

Thanks,
Alan

Hi Reflect,

Yes, I did have the checkbox checked for "Manage the Web site using hidden metadata files", and I did have the host uninstall and reinstall FPSE. But still I've got the problem when I publish to the site on the Internet.

Any idea how many people in this forum are actually using (even just experimentally) the EW beta with Dynamic Web Templates?

Thanks,
Alan

DWT's have nothing to do with FrontPage Extensions. the DWT is actually applied locally to your pages before published. In fact, there is really no reason to even have the DWT on the remote site.

That is usually due to a couple of things - in your case probably having some FP pages in your site with the old FP navigation structure, while the new EW pages do not. Thus some pages will never match.

Hi Windsun,

So FPSE are only needed on the server for the legacy FrontPage "bots" functionality? (I personally don't need the "bots" stuff, just DWT and link maintenance)
What is the relationship between FPSE and those hidden _vti folders? It sounds like you are saying those are independent?

As I understand it, DWT is a "design time" only thing? So I would need the _vti folders locally on my computer at "design time", because that is where the "metadata" used by DWT lives. Right?
But I don't need the _vti folders on the Internet server, because they aren't used at "viewing time". Right?

So the best setup for using DWT with EW is to enable metadata for the local copy of my site (which will create the _vti folders on my local machine)? Then publish to the Internet server using FTP rather than FPSE (both are options in EW's publishing dialog)? And if I use FTP to publish to the Internet, I won't need FPSE for that, so I can tell my host to uninstall the FPSE stuff from my site?

(Lots of questions ;-)

Thanks,
Alan
