jengoggtim -> Length of Web Name? (10/5/2006 11:42:02)

For SE purposes is it better to have a short name? My name is www.sunembroideryscreenprinting.com. I know its long & "embroidery" is often mispelled but it says what I do. Presently almost all of my business is local & local customers (who already know my name) do go to my site. I want to optimize my site locally so I can gain more local customers. Will the length of my name hurt my rankings? Thanks.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that 64 characters is the limit for a domain name, though I forget where now. I'm not sure if it'll hurt your ranking in terms of search engines, but from a human point of view, shorter tends to be better because it's usually easier to remember and to type - less chance of potential visitors mis-typing the name and ending up on your competitor's site instead. Of course you could also register variations of your domain name with the mis-spelling built in and redirect those onto your real domain name if you thought that was going to be a problem.

You might want to first consider your customers and maybe get a shorter URL for them to possibly use. Typing that in if they have to for an email or into the browser might make them consider going to another site. Even though search engines are important, customers can be more important

I would shorten it too. Typing that lot in is horrible.

I'd just go with the first bit.

Hello, jengoggtim!

I'm agree with guys. Your domain name is too long.
It's obviously that too short domain names are taken up or they cost too much to buy.

There is a good advise about web names:

Try to use 5 letters (even if they don't make sense) before or after your main keyword.

Best regards, Seopharmacy

UPD: I'm sorry. It was a misprint.

Is it just me or does none of that make any sense at all.

Nope, not you at all

coreybryant -> RE: Length of Web Name? (10/9/2006 10:08:22)

I just wonder how long he thinks the OPs domain name should be since he said it is too short (and most of us said too long). Maybe no coffee yet for him this morning?

Tailslide -> RE: Length of Web Name? (10/9/2006 10:13:04)

Or maybe some ham-based product is on the way? Or is that just me being cynical again?

jaybee -> RE: Length of Web Name? (10/9/2006 10:36:54)

No. looking at his 2 posts and looking at his nick, I would definitely say that he specialises in cured pork.

If the idea of having 5 random letters before your domain name (I think that's what he meant) works then ispamgoogle.com & ihatemicrosoft.com should be worth a few bob.

I am of the opinion that it has no impact on SE ranking. to me, the most important issue is can you say the name...over the phone, over lunch, over a drink..and the 'receiver" remember the name easily and be able to type it in w/out error. to that effect, the word embroidery isnt good - easy to misspell.

Tailslide -> RE: Length of Web Name? (10/9/2006 12:32:32)

Hey Dan - good to see you again!

dpf -> RE: Length of Web Name? (10/9/2006 12:33:16)

thanks

I don't think it's too long at all. *Especially* if it's already an established business name. You said:

quote:

I want to optimize my site locally

and so IMO a short name is not nearly as important as any established identity. If the company name is Sun Embroidery Screen Printing, by all means don't give that up. Don't worry so much about misspellings. Rather try to buy some of the misspellings to catch those. You may be able to get those for a paltry $9 a year. Minimal when comparing to changing any company identities.

And if someone is trying to type in the name from memory, if they don't get there they will probably use a search engine (see Mango, I didn't use Google as a verb [:D]) to find it and most search engines will suggest misspellings.

But by no means don't give up an established identity for a short web site name. It's not worth it for locally oriented sites..

Now if you want to go national or international, go for the short name.[;)]
