any way to unencrypt my encrypted file? - 10/5/2006 21:48:29
Hi,
I just reformatted my HD and forgot to unencrypt a few files before doing so. Is there any way to get these files back?

Depends what they were encrypted with. Go to the developer site and see if they have a forum or support section.

Thanks I found the answer:
quote:

To be able to recover encrypted information on a computer in this case, you must have backed up the Recovery Agent's private key before the loss of the key.

So i guess i lost them :):):)

Question, did you have an image or full backup?

If so there is still hope. You can restore that image to another drive, mount that drive as the primary. Then make a backup of the key. Then use that key on the new drive.

Take care,

Windows encryption? :)

If you didn't set the password for the file, then the default pw is that of the user account that initially encrypted the file. So if you were on username John and password rabbit, the password for all encrypted files would be rabbit, assuming that John was the one who encrypted the files.

You need to ask yourself, how important are the files you want to get access to?

This may or may not work for you: http://www.lostpassword.com/efs.htm and http://www.crackpassword.com/products/prs/mswin/efs/ (i've had good luck with crackpassword decryption programs before)

You can also use a program that will look for the key file on your computer, even though it has already been formatted. Not all programs work, but they should be able to access your key file. It can take quite awhile to do it, but it is worth it if the files are important and you don't want to spend any money.

they were just copies of the encrypted files, i didn't make a full backup, I just copied the files i wanted...

It doesn't ever ask for a password, it says the administrator has to give permission to access the files

How are you trying to decrypt it?

Honestly, I thought I would be able to open it, 'cause I am the administrator, I didn't realize it was really locked this well, I cant copy, move, extract, Hex, or do anything else to these files, I can't even delete them...

Next time i make something secure I am going to use something I understand completely...

and here is what it was saying about the certificates:
quote:

This CA Root certificate is not trusted because it is not in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store.
