Who is making money programming on Freelance Websites ? - 10/6/2006 21:41:32
Hey there... how many of you guys are acctually making money on Freelance websites or have been working on

such websites?

I have worked for over 1 year for RentACoderwebsite but for

the past 9-10 months I get my projects from

GetaFreelancer.com . I like the GAF one better cause

projects are valued much higher than on RAC ( where some duds were offering $30 max for a complete website

and so on ).

I wonder how many of you people around here are working on such websites and what is your general oppinion

about them.

Hi and Welcome to OutFront.

Personally, I never do anything from any of those sites. I think those sites are bad for all of us. It's like going to a nice restaurant and expecting to pay McDonalds prices. Turns us all into commodities. Never been to one and probably never will.

Just my $.02

I've never bothered with those sites either - they remind me of a Dutch Auction.

I think the only thing that's worse than those places is eBay, where you get seller advertising that you can get: "A complete website for only $50!!!!!!!!!" :)

Found one a couple of weeks ago offering a 20 page site plus branding etc for £20. There are never any examples of their work though.

That pretty much says it all.

Well that's true ... BUT ... I am from Romania. This country sucks anyway ... I mean ... great country but poor mofos and a sucky life ( average sallary is 150$/mo wtf ).

So ... if there's no way to make something of yourself in a place like this you can either LEAVE someplace else or, if you are good with it ( im talking about web designers/developers etc ) use the freelance websites to work from your home. And you can earn over 1K $ from sitting home. Of course you guys have some jobs we win that sallary but for me ( and some indians and other poor idiots out there ) it's like a really considerable option.

Take my website for example : www.this.is.home.ro that's where I have my portfolio. Now ppl told me if I would live in a different country like UK, US whateva I could be making some nice money. But since IM NOT ... and IM not all that thrilled about leaving ... I got no chioce :)

Donno ... it works for some ppl ... it works for me ...

Glad it works for you and yes you're right, in the western world we're used to higher salaries but that's only because our cost of living is waaaaaaay above yours, so although it sounds like we're all rich, it's actually far from the truth.

I think what we have against those sites though is that a large part of what comes out of them is very poor and when you work your butt off to try and make a living doing an honest job you get a bit annoyed at someone ripping off those who don't know any better.

http://www.w3csites.com/members.asp?Country=Romania

There's 37 Romanian designers on this site that seem to be doing okay with local clientele, 38 from India also, doesn't seem to me as if Romanian businesses aren't willing to pay for quality work.

You might also take a look at The Career Aspects of Web Development - a lot of great information floating around there as well.

Thanks for the Romanian Welcome message.

About the richness and poorness.

I got a 150$ average salary and I pay 1.2 $/ Liter for Gasoline. 1.4 $ / pack of cigars 5$ / kg of meat ... etc ...
Usually the food is very expensive here. More expensive than almost anywhere in Europe. I can barely take my car out for a spin with such a high price for gas.

Our prices are sometimes EVEN HIGHER than yours. Trust me when I say this ... you barely can afford to eat, Im not talking about paying bills, buying clothing and such ...

Anyway enough being said about the life style and expenses ... Freelance websites do come as a nice alternative for good coders in countries where you got no viable choice :)

I was reading through the small business forum you guys mentioned ... looks like a place where a lot of ppl from our area meet.

I might repost the same question to them too ... regarding the freelance thing. Im a bit quite surprised to see Freelancing just doesn't do it in western countries ...

I think it is mainly about trust. When we first started out a number of years ago, we went thru a dozen or so of different people. Some just needed a few bucks etc. And then we finally found someone who was trustworthy and stood by us. He has been with us for 2 1/2 years. It takes time - just be patient.

A lot of times, you will probably get someone who wants something very little - they might want to see if you can deliver. Deliver that and more will probably come.

It usually is cheaper in mainland Europe. I pay around 92p ($1.72) per litre for diesel and I believe the average basic unleaded petrol price is around 88p ($1.64).

For those of you in the US there are 3.78 US gallons to the Litre.

Which is why I've been running the Land Rover on Vegetable Oil!

No significant effect on the HP - the important thing is that you must have linear fuel pumps and not common rail injection (which is what new diesel engines are) unless you heat the fuel to 80deg C (which by a coincidence happens to be typical coolant temperature in your radiator so you just need a heat exhanger). Some people get better results adding around 5% of white spirit/turps/kerosene/petrol in order to thin the fuel instead of using heat.

Basically, if you've got a diesel with a Bosch pump then you're probably ok.

The only problem is that your car will smell like a chip shop - but you do get used to it!

Packet of cigarettes around $9 US. My car won't run on vegetable oil or lard so I'm stuck with super unleaded which this morning at my local garage was 98p per litre ($1.82 US). To get the bus into the local shopping centre, return fare has just gone up to £3 ($5.59US) a grand total of 6 mile round trip and they've just announced on the news that the average price for a house in the UK now stands at £199,874 ($372,249US).

I think emigration is looking good.

Never mind Jaybee, you'll soon qualify for a free OAP bus pass. :)

Knowing my luck, by the time I actually reach that age, which is not for some considerable time yet you cheeky moo, they'll have decided to charge for the bus passes. Either that or there'll be so few buses that the pass won't matter.
