Critique Site - Too Much Text? - 10/9/2006 12:44:59
I'm about to revise my site www.sunembroideryscreenprinting.com (used template). My question is: Is there too much text with the sidebar & "Sun Tribune" blurbs? Is it too confusing to read? I'll change the banner to my name, fix Firefox problems, redo keywords, add sidebar menu to every page, add work examples, robots. txt files, new content pages, improve H1 & H2 titles & add alt tags. Thanks!

You don't have too much text, it's just on the wrong page. The text you have on the homepage isn't an attention-catching introduction but something that belongs to the about page.
You should come up with a concise way to tell what the business is about. See how Flickr did it. They could have introduced a large wall of text on their homepage about the advanced posting features, tagging, notes, blogging, groups, friends & family, photo organizing, RSS/Atom support etc. etc. But instead, there's an example photo, a catchy phrase and the statement “The best way to store, search, sort and share your photos”.
To be honest, your website doesn't even look like a screen printing company. The image on the right could be any stock image and have nothing to do with the business itself. For example, here a personnel service company in Finland has flowers and plants all around the website but their business has nothing to do with gardening.
You need to design it with more meaning. A visitor doesn't only read the text but the images and appearance too.
About shirts, does the Busted Tees homepage have a long introduction to the quality, popularity and the low price of their t-shirts? Nope.
The key is to go straight to the business first, then—when you already have a new customer—start explaining.

What about searchable keywords and H1 & H2 tags on the index page if the focus is an "attention getter" rather than content? I'll remove alot of the photos but almost all of them are of garments I sell. I wanted the site to be visually pleasing instead of just having a little text on some of the pages but now I'm ready to add more text so I can do without some of the photos. I do think some of the sidebar cells help give people ideas on what to do. The Busted Tees site looks great but I do custom work rather than preprinted shirts so its harder to set up my site in a similar way. I'll add an "attention getter" in the banner area & move most of the text to new pages.

I dont think there's too much text. It is quiet informative. But i recommend you to be conscise and specific. You can use images instead of hundreds of words. Is the banner yet to be designed ? Anyhow a nice work !

I don't think there is to much text either. I think the blue thick strip up the top could be replaced my a large image or flash animation thing or something, but that is your choice. It may brighten it up a little.
Just a thought.

letter-spacing : 2px;
is probably the first place to start

I am afraid you are facing the same problem many others do. Your index page is looking the least appealing of all. Every other page has some pictures in it and nicely broken text. The index page on the other hand is too simple looking with too much text. Another thing is, you need to do something about the top title. If you've put it there for the sake of Search engines, it should be H1. If not, loose it or make it a part of your header image. Your site could end up looking really smart, you know. Just play with it a little bit more.
