caz -> Unused email address still gets spam (10/10/2006 5:42:51)

How come I get spam on an address that has not been used by me anywhere yet? I have switched ISPs, got a new email account and have yet to use this address on the net anywhere but the spam is trickling in already. I have given this address to a handful of people I know in preparation for the big switch over, but that is all.

I have become sick and tired of the deluge of spam on my old addresses and plan to ditch them totally in a week or so after I have given alternatives to the people I want to have them. Everyone else can have the googlemail one or be bounced. Is there anything else I can do?

I get it as well. I suspect it's the automated bots. The spammer gets the last bit of the address. sticks it in a database and then the bot just fires off spam to millions of combinations.

What can you do, nothing apart from set up filters and if you have a whiltelist facility stick OK addresses in there. Problem with that one is remembering to do it every time you get a new address from someone you do want to talk to.

It could also be that the people you've given the address to have/had a virus/trojan on their machine that handed over their address book.

What's the first part of the e-mail address? Usually if you have numbers in the email (not in the format of a year), spammers can't get the e-mail.

Ever e-mail someone and have them forward that e-mail to someone? All it takes is one bad person on the forward list to get you in trouble.

If you get enough spam, you might want to see about running your e-mail account through another server that checks for spam.

Yes, as mentioned you have given your id to your friend and they might have tried to contact you through email which got caught by some bad man in between.
There are many email spider available for free on the net. These software also make spammers work easy.
