Print on demand publishers? - 10/16/2006 17:04:23
I've got two forthcoming jobs for people who want to make their printed material available to people online - preferably using electronic delivery 'ebooks' and also a hard copy version. In one case it's a booklet, approx. 20 pages, and in the other it's play scripts.

I read an article in one of the web mags a couple of months ago about print on demand publishers (you submit your book or whatever electronically and they store it and it gets printed when someone orders it). Unfortunately in a fit of foolishness I tidied up, and off went my stack of old web mags to the dump before I'd checked through them for articles I wanted to keep. I eventually discovered it was Web User mag and found a list of links to sites that were presumably mentioned in the artlcle on their forums.

I spent ages yesterday trawling the web for something suitable, but no joy. Most of them want mega bucks (relatively speaking) to take on you and have a publishing fee for each item before you start with the print costs and offer full blown marketing and whatnot, which isn't needed in either of these two cases - they just want to be able to make their work available to the public without the hassle of having to print and distribute it themselbes, and the ones that seemed reasonable said the minimum number of pages was 48, and most were US based. The only thing I've found that comes close to what they want seems to be Cafepress, but again that's US based. Anyone know of anyone else offering ebook/print on demand, especially UK based?

Cafepress is the only one I know of. The fact they're US isn't a major problem but the Brit contingent are pushing the to open a UK store. I think I'll be pushing up daisies by the time they get round to it though.

Just found a UK one but they want a minimum of 96 pages, only print B&W and for 1 copy it's £1230!!!!!!

The only other one is Lulu.com a friend uses them and he seems pleased.

Just realised I looked at that one earlier, but dismissed it and didn't look into it really. It looks like that might be the answer. :)

I think CafePress only print B&W too, don't they?

Here;s a UK site that has contacted us at author-me.com and has continued to exist for a few years. It is http://www.pabd.com/ (Publish and be damned.)

Nice guys. More reasonable price for a print version. You might ask about ebook.

Thanks cookcomm, but that not really what I'm looking for. From a quick look it looks like it's more like traditional "vanity publishing". In both these two cases though they don't want to have to shell anything out upfront if they can help it. One's a part time playwright and she's likely to be wanting to have a number of her short plays available, so it just wouldn't be economical to pay upfront for each one. The other's a charity venture that raises funds in part through selling booklets. The last time they had the booklet printed they just used a small local printer and sold it locally, but of course that meant paying upfront, minimum print run, storing the finished article, and distributing it...

It looks like Lulu might fit the bill in both cases, and particularly as they do different formats.
