Do key phrases help SEO if not in content? - 10/17/2006 3:00:56
Another staff member wants me to add these key phrases and words to every page of this website. He is wanting especially to optimise for Google. I thought that it was important for SEO that the content and headings of the page should use the keywords and phrases listed in the metadata. He doesn't think that is necessary. He also thinks that if you enter key phrases into the keyword metadata that those phrases will attract people who type the individual words of the phrase into the basic Google engine (not just the exact phrase in Advanced Google). I would appreciate some opinions on this.
(As an aside, note that for SEO I also intend to remove heaps of javascript, change style names to standard ones like h1 and eventually remove the table formatting).
I had previously recorded here the many keywords and key phrases he wants me to include, but I'll now remove them, in case he finds this posting when he next checks the success of his keywords!

Your gut and unwrtitten words are correct. You must target the keyword phrases using what you described, also a lot of incoming links using anchor text.
The meta for keywords is rarely looked at by SEs.

Thanks a lot Reflect for the confirmation, and the reminder on anchor text. Also, my colleague thinks there is no harm in having such large number of keywords and phrases in the metadata (added to those words there already). Is there in fact any harm in it?
The main problem with such a large number of keywords seems to me to be:
- you can't include such a large number in any appealing way or with a reasonable density into the content (I've heard 2% density of each keyword into page content for Google is about right).
I guess this problem isn't actual harm, so should I keep him happy and put the keywords and key phrases into the meta data to keep him happy? And work on content optimisation in my own quiet way?

This is just what I needed Jaybee! I thought that his 21 keywords or phrases, plus the 19 we had already was just way too much to allow us any reasonable word concentration in the content.
But I might be able to focus on some of his desired keywords/phrases on other pages on the site to at least some extent. This might be a workable compromise.
I liked the other guidelines in your list too!
