YNWA -> Hit Counter (10/17/2006 4:06:11)

After a request from a user I added a hit counter to my main page recently. It works okay, but only seems to register visits to the main website index page.

A lot of entries to my site are directly to various areas (as opposed to coming in through the "front door") and these are not being picked up by the hit counter.

My question is how can I get the hit counter to recognise ALL hits or visits to the site, as just registering visits to the index page is missing too many visitors and renders it pointless??

Thanks in advance for any guidance offered.

Which is why we don't recommend putting hit counters on sites. Apart from which they're old hat and tacky and can show just how many visitors you don't get.

You're far better off checking your stats if the host provides them. If they don't you can set up your own stats.

And why would you do it at the request of a user? What business is it of theirs as to how many hits you get?

you could add a hit counter to each page maybe, if you really want.

I did think that may be an option... however can all the separate counters be added up automatically? I have numerous pages on the site, and to do it manually every few days would leave me with no time to update the site!!

Can it be done automatically??

Agree. However, invisible page counters which track Unique Visitors and other meaningful data can be a valuable site effectiveness tool.

www.statcounter.com/ offers this free service which has the added advantage of allowing your web client to access stats direct (after inputting UN/PW). Simply add script to the body section of pages you want to track. No adware but you are cookied.

True but if you have stats on your host why would you?

I've changed hosts 3-4x and each one has a different (and sometimes convoluted) way of making server stats available.

Like my leather Navy flight jacket, which is well past its "survey" date, StatCounter still looks good and fits fine. To each his own.

Methinks you use the wrong hosts. [;)]
