Move mailbox to a different user? - 10/17/2006 12:16:43
I have Windows 2003 server and Exchange 2003 and I have just created a new user but I would like to associate them with an existing mailbox. Can this be done? Steve

associate them with an existing mailbox in what respect??? you want them to have the older mail??? you want them to utilize the other email address??? you want them to get copies of the other inbound/outbound mail??? can you elaborate a little bit here????

I thought it was quite clear???? I want their logon associated with an existing mailbox. That would mean that the existing mailbox would be referenced against their AD entry. Copies of mail or forwarding would not require an association per se but might require forwarding etc. Anyway it would appear that I need to ensure that I have a decent mailbox retention period set, delete the existing userid which also deletes the mailbox but retains it for the retention period. I then create a new ID and then associate the deleted yet retained mailbox with the new ID. Steve

uhhhh....couldn't you simply export the old mailbox (to a .pst) then delete the old account... (now you have your mail...no retention needed) import that backup to the new users mailbox, and add an alias to their exchange accout (olduser@whatever.com) to keep the inbound mail coming in to them??? perhaps I'm missing something here...your explaination sounds overly complicated...

The reason that I need to move the mailbox is because there is a corruption in the user account and I cannot access the mailbox through the user account, therefore I can't export the mailbox to a .pst account. I need to physically associate the existing mailbox with the new user account. Steve

ok...I get it.... (you failed to mention the correuption issue...) you can possibly stabilize and get a handle on the offending mailbox via: http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Recovering-Mailboxes-Exchange2003-SP1.html not sure if there are issues I'm not aware of in your organization that will prevent this method, however I have used this method before with success... I just thought It might help you out... you can fix/move the corrupted mailbox to a new users mailbox...hope this helps you...I know what it's like to face exchange issues..best of luck...
