Frontpage and IIS on localhost - 10/18/2006 17:20:53
I just bought a new computer and am attempting to get my Frontpage site up on it. The problem is that I don't think IIS is installing server extensions on c:\inetpub\wwwroot. When I try to open localhost from within Frontpage I get the error -- http://localhost/ isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password or the filename contains a / or \. Localhost is running. A default htm page works just fine. I found the following discussion that is about the same issue http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-222358/key-iis%252Cserver%252Cextensions%252Clocalhost/tm.htm#222358 I followed the directions as follows: Install Frontpage 2003 Install IIS from Add/Remove Windows Components When I: Right Click On My Computer>>Manage>>Expand Services and Applications Tree>>Expand Internet Information Services Tree>>Expand Web Sites Tree>>Right Click On Default Web>>Properties>> There is no Server Extensions option at all. When installing IIS I wasn't given any options for what to install. How do I get server extensions on localhost? Microsoft.com has deleted all the links to download the server extensions that I could find. I would think installing on a brand new computer would be pretty straight forward, but obviously I am wrong. Please help!! Kelly

Aren't they still built into IIS6's install? I've been reading about these going away but I never specifically install them on an IIS6 setup but rather just enable them. What is your OS and IIS version?

I am running Windows XP Media Edition 2005 which I believe has IIS 5.1 According to all the sites I've read, Media Edition is XP Professional with a few extra media features. I did not install Norton Anti-Virus and the Personal Firewall is off. This is my personal computer that I do all my testing from.

I have MCE2002, IIS works fine. Check in control panel-administrative tools-services and verify the WWW service is in fact running for starters. Then open the IIS management console, verify the default web site is running. FYI, localhost is only a tcp alias for 127.0.0.1, which is the loopback IP address for your computer. localhost, 127.0.0.1, or your computername will all end up at the same IIS if it's running.
