Does Google care how many years of domain registration ... - 10/18/2006 17:47:15
During a recent conversation with someone at GoDaddy.com about renewing my domain names, the agent remarked that they had recently been informed by Google was going to do or not do certain things (what, was very vague) depending on whether or not a domain was registered for 5 years. Rather than pull out my wallet with and tell her to "sign me up for 5 years right now", I elected to talk it over with my partner first. Is this just a way to get people to sign up for 5 years or is Google really trying to somehow separate the wheat from the chaff based on the length of registration of a domain?

Ken, Nobody knows for sure since Google doesn't advertise the variables and measurements used by their ever changing algo. That said, Google did become a registrar a while back so they have all the domain information and they do speak of trust and domains in at least one of their patent applications. Also, if you think about it a bit, which is more likely to be a throw away domain used for spam - 1) domain registered for less than a year or 2) a domain that is registered for 5+ years. For only $7 per year you can buy peace of mind concerning this issue.

mojo: didnt that surface in one of google's patent filings? that they infact give greater weight to sites with longer domain registrations for the very reasons you cited?

It is mentioned, but that doesn't mean it is actually being used as a measurement. My guess is that it has a small part in the algo or maybe it's used only if a site doesn't pass the smell test and Google wants to take a closer look.

As already stated Google does not provide the details of how it's web bot operates. So I don't know this for a fact. However, I've read in my SEO research that it is a good idea to be registered for at least two additional years beyond the current date. That is to say you would want to own the domain until October 2008.

Thanks guys. I'll probably renew the domain for 5 year, not because of some vague thing Google might or might not do, but because it's a good price and I don't have to fool with it for another 5 years. I'll try to get more specifics from them, when I call back to renew.

The age of the domain is one of the factors considered by Google. However, along with it, there are lots of other factors, which Google considers. And the weightage given to the age of the domain (or any factor for that matter) varies from time to time. This helps Google to be fair to all. It makes perfect sense. I went from here to my registrar's website and checked my own domains. Three of them were under 5 years. Not anymore... Thank you!

Many people are saying that it makes sense if it actually was a factor (registration periods can have meaning to it), because of what Mojo said above, but none have been able to prove that it is a factor.

One other thing to consider that I just learned about recently is that because Google is now a registrar they have access to all your domain information, including who registered the domain. If you have multiple domains and are using them to point to one another for link popularity they can figure that out if all the domains are registered to the same name. The question is "are they doing that at this time?" <edit>Please keep links in signature.</edit>
