Have a website, would like help to make life easier wit... - 10/26/2006 12:21:45
I started the following website over a year ago and it has grown rapidly and large at the same time.

www.weareoil.com

I'm a newbie at doing this kind of stuff. I have FrontPage 2002 (XP Version).

Situation is this, when I make any change to the main page I have to manually make that change to hundreds of pages as well. I need help on learning how I can make this easier for me.

Also, in doing this kind of thing how does this work with the sub folders or sub directories within my file structure.

Also looked at what was under Custom Web Templates for FrontPage, Dreamweaver, or Expression Web and would like to make changes to my site. Using the drop down features in like the Fairey Chevrolet site, but I have no clue on any of this stuff.

My goals are many, but I really want to make this site out to be very user friendly, informative, professional looking and want to be able have all search engines like the site as well.

All help is greatly appreciated here. Thanks.

Unfortunately, such things are best thought of at the beginning...sort of like designing the foundation to accomodate 3 stories rather than one and then deciding you want 3 stories. If you look thru the tutorials on this site, you will find a marvelous Front Page function called "includes" which are perfect for what you want and not too hard to master - however, lots of work to convert your pages.
Good luck

There's a lot to be said about this site and you will probably get many helpful comments.

I'll try to make this short as possible. Read up on "Shared Borders" and "Server Side Includes".
For any text that is common on more than one page in your site, you should any one of the above features. Change one file and the change is implemented across all pages that reference that file. Because you are using FrontPage, you can use the Shared Borders feature if your content is in the top, left, side, and bottom borders of your page. Shared borders are easy to use but you are limited to using them because you can only use them in the regions (top, bottom etc.) of the page. With Server Side Includes, you can include them anywhere on your page.

As for your subfolders or subwebs, they function independently of your main web, which means you can have a totally different web, navigation and all. If you want the subwebs to look the same as the main web, with Shared Borders, you'll have to recreate the same navigation twice, once in the main and in the subweb. With Server Side Includes, simply point to the file you used for your main navigation.

Blue bar, very top of this page, Tutorials/FAQ. There are two tutorials in there about includes and various other useful sections.

could you change the "website of" in white text? it's hard to read....

I would suggest a different header that shows the biz name more clearly and states something like "supplier of Amsoil products"........I'd put all that info about your contacts, names, etc at the top in a header

you have to scroll way down before you see any more text & just links on the left....left me wondering why I keep moving until bam, there's the rest.

as for the hundreds of pages you keep changing with updates, maybe you could use inline frames for the content and leave the multiple menus in place, or could you use css?

The header is too big in size, moreover color management is not properly handled. Lot of blank space in the mid of the page creates a feeling that the page is incomplete. Anyway a nice effort.
