all processes running but nothing shows up on desktop - 10/30/2006 0:34:01
hi
I have a dell inspiron laptop with XP , used it for abt a year, but suddenly since last few days i have noticed after i start the laptop nothing shows up on the screen, not even the task bar, no icons, no desktop , just my wall paper that i had selected. but if i click ctrl-alt-del and see the taskbar , i see all the necessary processes running, and from there if i try to start "Explore" process ,nothing happens .
can someone please help , i have no cluse what is happening and what could be the problem

thanks much

Well the resident Dell expert here is all doom and gloom but said....

Try starting up in Safe Mode (hit F8 while booting up)
See if the icons all appear. If they do then it's probably a driver and you'll need to work out which. It could however be the hard drive on its way out so while in safe mode back up anything you need.

If they don't then dig out your Dell rescue disk and do a re-install.

If there's still no joy then get on to Dell. Hopefully you had a longer than 1 year warranty.

Hi avoodi

Try this. Right click any area of the screen and point to 'arrange icons by'. In the drop down menu left click 'show desktop items'.

If this did not help then go into safe mode as explained by jaybee. Click the System Restore link. Click Restore My Computer to an earlier time followed by next and choose a date when everything was ok. Follow the on screen instructions.

Hope this helps.

Good points Brian and far less drastic than the resident Dell experts offerings. :) but in his favour he's had to fix a load of Inspirons with screwed hard drives recently so he's over compensating.

give this a go as well. my inspiron locks up too, having said that I am 100% sure it s aosftware issue.

when you login and everytuing is there minus the explorer, do the alt+ctrl+de and get the list of things running on your system. find "explorer.ese" in the Task Manager/Processes window ( not the "application" tab). once you found explorer.exe in processes tab, select it and then kill it by clicking End process. you system should no t crash or anything, because that is just the front end gui. Now go to the "Applications" tab and click on "New TasK". A prompt pops up, into which you just type "explorer". normally this should bring explorer back on if there was any issue which initially stopped it loading correctly.
