Hi avoodi Try this. Right click any area of the screen and point to 'arrange icons by'. In the drop down menu left click 'show desktop items'. If this did not help then go into safe mode as explained by jaybee. Click the System Restore link. Click Restore My Computer to an earlier time followed by next and choose a date when everything was ok. Follow the on screen instructions. Hope this helps.

give this a go as well. my inspiron locks up too, having said that I am 100% sure it s aosftware issue. when you login and everytuing is there minus the explorer, do the alt+ctrl+de and get the list of things running on your system. find "explorer.ese" in the Task Manager/Processes window ( not the "application" tab). once you found explorer.exe in processes tab, select it and then kill it by clicking End process. you system should no t crash or anything, because that is just the front end gui. Now go to the "Applications" tab and click on "New TasK". A prompt pops up, into which you just type "explorer". normally this should bring explorer back on if there was any issue which initially stopped it loading correctly.
