Links dont work with firefox - 10/30/2006 16:47:06
Ive just designed a site on MS Frontpage. It works fine on AOL 9.0 and IE, but the links on this page; http://www.gillfordparkfc.co.uk/; are apparently not working in Firfox!

Help!

How did you insert a link?

Typed "Click here to enter" in a text-box, then highlighted, and choose the 'Frontpage.htm' file.

After you highlighted it, you right-clicked and went to Hyperlink, and then selected the page?

Also... did you make this page in MS Word, and then used FrontPage to edit it?

Bobby, this appears to be the link,

quote:

<tr>
<td align="right" valign="top">
<p align="right"><font face="Eras Demi ITC">
<a href="frontpage.htm" style="text-decoration: none"><font color="#000000">
Click here to enter</font></a></font></td>
</tr>

Either Word or Frontpage in Design View and a lot of dragging. Which would explain why it works in IE but not in a standards compliant browser like Fx (plus there is no doctype :))

- I'm mainly concerned with all the added stuff that appears to be from MS Word....

If he inserts the link correctly in FrontPage, then he will need to go through and remove all of the extra code, because FrontPage isn't going to work around it.

It works fine on AOL 9.0 and IE,
AOL 9 is IE, they're both the same thing so it works in IE but no other browser.

It looks like you've either done some of this in Word or another office package and then copied it over or you've used the shape tools in Frontpage to set this up.

Either way it creates a load of code that browsers other than IE don't understand.

You need to re-do it using standard FrontPage stuff. If you go to the top of this page there's a thin blue bar with Tutorials/FAQ. In there are some very good walk-throughts for starting off with Frontpage and designing your first site.

Here's a small hint for you....

NEVER USE WORD/EXCEL/POWERPOINT TO BUILD SITES! :)

If you have problems doing something in FP come and ask us for help. Resorting to using the other packages will just get you up to your neck in very deep doo-doo. One of these days I'll track down the guy who thought it was a good idea to put a Save As HTML option in the Office products and do him some severe mischief. :)

Forget Word and the way it works with textboxes. You're doing web design now not Word Processing. Use those tutorials at the top of the page and it explains about laying out pages and how to get things in boxes. Come back if you get stuck.

Oh and welcome to Outfront Harley. What a great name. (my other half is called Harvey)

Okay, thanks. Ive redone some of the pages by inserting a textbox using the icon at the bottom of FP, 5 along from where it has the autoshapes menu, then copying the text from the msword-created-textbox into the new one. Will these be okay for firefox?

Download Firefox here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ so that you can check your site as you go along.

not it won't - text boxes are proprietary MS stuff that only works in IE, fireofx users will see a badly redndered gif. use a table cell(s) instead (i assume you're probably using tables) or redesign that part

:)If at first you don't succeed....... give up.

Why the obsession with text boxes?

Is your page on the web? Can we get a look at it? If so we can probably help you over this temporary hiatus.

Not give up entirely, just sacrifice quality for ease. Website is; www.gillfordparkfc.co.uk

Oh duh, sorry, course it is.

Quality sacrificed for ease is fine if the page is readable in all browsers but it's totally munched in anything other than IE. Now that's fine when IE is completely dominating the web but the stats on all my sites and my client sites are saying that it now commands only 67% of the market. That's a heck of a lot of people that will see a munched site.

Instead of text boxes, try laying it out with tables.

Top menu,
Insert table, you then decide on how many rows and columns.
Format allows you to add background colours etc to the entire table or row/column and cells.

At the moment you have no text on the page, it's all graphics inserted into text boxes. If you do it with tables you lay the page out and then type actual text in which means it's easy to change.

There's a tutorial here you can work through. It's based on FP 2000 but if you have a later version the principals are the same. It takes you step by step through making the site.

If you take the time to do it now you'll find it so much easier in the long run. The way you have it now is going to be a pain to change on a regular basis.

incidentally on the splash (home page) the dark grey on black is very hard to read (easy to miss, not good for 'Enter') and as is the black on grey

the header is a bitmap (406.93 kB) but should be a jpeg (see attached as an example)and the text in your navigation turns to a white rectangle when i hover over it
