Html to ASP redirect time - 11/3/2006 12:16:39
Hi Guys and Gals,

Not to beat a dead horse but I am changing most of pages on my site from html to asp. The search engines have a lot of my html pages listed and ranked. Once I have the new asp page set up, I am going back to the old html page and striping out everything except the head info where I put a Meta redirect.

I have set the redirect time to "1" second to quickly get my visitor over to the new page. I read that you could hurt your ranking if you are under "5" seconds in the redirect. It doesn't make sense to me why you would want to make your visitors wait 5 seconds when you could accomplish this in 1 second.

I would appreciate any info on this from anybody who has had experience with redirect, time and search engine position.

Meta redirects have not always worked well with the search engines. I am concerned that you may lose some ranking if you're not careful.

Anyhow, I don't understand why you're going through all this trouble. If the search engines already have your HTML pages and you just want to have ASP capabilities then there is a much better solution. Have your host change the HTML application extension so that it is mapped, or runs, from the asp.dll. Doing this, you can make all your HTML page behave like they are ASP pages.

If you have access to IIS you can do the following:
Right click the site > choose properties > click home directory > click configuration button > find the ASP extension and copy the executable path > find the HTML extension > set it's path to the ASP path > click OK

Now, you can run ASP code on your HTML pages.
