hajisaftar -> You v. Registry, round ....? (11/4/2006 12:18:16)

Hi

those of you following the CPU cooler thread know about my new system. With the arrival of this, I am now in a position to - if I want- format my laptop and put a fresh windows.

the isntallation on my laptop now, is just over two years old (yes, beleive it or not!). BUT its bruised and tearfully slow. In this period it has gone through a few virus attacks, some major screw ups by myself, and probably more than 1000 uninstalls on the least.

I am just wondering what is the longest anyone has ever managed NOT to format their PC or laptop and put a fresh windows? (if you have ghosted your HD that DOES count in my book as a fresh instalation)? I want to see if there is any point in biting the bullet and keeping to my word of not formatting, or whether there will come a point where I will have to choose between a suicide, a homocide or a fresh windows?!?!?

So its over to you, how long has your current windows been running? here is mine:

Dell 510m, Install date 30/10/2004, mcahine used over 8 hours a day doing everything you can imagine!

With your laptop, can you simply backup the documents and other files, and then reformat it? Or do you have quite a bit of programs that need to be reinstalled?

I ran an old HP for 6 years, never reformatted it, never had any slowness.

We have a Dell that is about 5 years old (super slow, about ready to set it on fire everytime I have to use it)

Another HP that is about 3 years old (somewhat slow).

My current computer (custom built) is starting to slow down during boot times, but that could be caused by the number of hard drives I run. I haven't done any research on this yet, but I hope that's the problem.

I never re-install unless I have a disaster. I clear out the rubbish and defrag once a month. I run registry clean ups once a month along with a duplicate file checker. My browsers are all set to empty cache and history on shut down. I run 2 firewalls (hardware and software) have an auto update virus checker and 4 separate Spyware/Trojan checkers/blockers.

This machine is 2 years old, the one next to it is coming up to 5 years old, the one on the other desk is also 5 years old and the two laptops are 3 years and 1 year old respectively.

None of them have had a re-install.

The one downstairs is constantly reinstalled but that's the test bed for beta OS.

The key is to defrag once a month as Jaybee mentioned.

Also reg clean applications to remove all the dead ends/orphaned registry keys will breath life into it.

Take care,

Brian

Not for a long time. I keep mine defragged now with Magical Defrag. I had a problem a couple of months ago with my laptop slowing down - that tends to get a lot of hard use because I use it for trying out betas and trials of stuff and at the moment it's used 12hrs + a day. Turned out the problem was some AV software though, and ditching that and using Magical Defrag have restored it to it's former speedy self.

That's the one I use. You know when you get those darned apps in the Windows Add/Remove Program list that you can't get rid of under any circumstances. That does it.

Defrag I use O&O Defrag. The Win XP version is rubbish. Even the MS staff don't use it.
