Nick -> Upgrade Ram or Buy New Computer (11/6/2006 13:06:47)

Hi All,

My kids' computer in the basement is a HP Pavilion 513w with Celeron cpu 1.8ghz, 256mb ram and 120 gig hd. Whenever I do anything on it the ram is almost always maxed out and I want to either add ram or buy another computer all together. The question is which is the smartest thing to do?

To max out ram I have found I can get 2gb for approx $300.00 online. Seems that $300 would go along way towards a new computer these days. What would you all do?

Thanks,

Nick

It's an HP [:'(]. Buy a new one.

Clean that one out, reinstall the OS and let them use it as a homework machine or something.

Spooky -> RE: Upgrade Ram or Buy New Computer (11/6/2006 14:22:27)

DONT buy 2 gb of ram, you will not get the performance increase for the money,
For a celery 1.8, be happy with it running 512mb (or just as a backup pc for the kids)

Why is it always maxed? too many background programs running?
A fresh windows install would do wonders if the normal housekeeping doesnt help.

I cleaned out my sisters laptop recently, and found there were over 2 gb of temporarty files and other cached items.
The registry shrunk by over 40% when cleaned out.....

eg :
go start > run >and type %temp%

Press enter. What youll see is a whole load of temporary files that should / could be deleted.
There are many housekeeping items you can do prior to a reinstall.

Spooky,

Can I just 'select all' (temp files) and delete them, because there are a ton of them on their computer! Second question, 512k memory is the best a celeron computer can handle?

Nick

Spooky -> RE: Upgrade Ram or Buy New Computer (11/6/2006 20:09:25)

Yep, that will work. If you arent sure, send them to the recycle bin first.
Once cleaned out though, you should defrag the PC

Have you also run various spyware programs to be sure thats not using resources?
Are there a lot of icons in the taskbar that arent needed?

512 isnt the max, but Im talking bang for your buck. Its not going to be a rocketship anyway, so would work quite happily on 512 if you dont multitask many programs at once. You wont see any reasonable speed increase after that anyway

Spooky,

Running Spysweeper, and Aol/Kaspersky virus protection daily. Also sweep with adaware too.

Have a internet filter for the kids on this computer but right now I have it disabled and still see available ram down to 4k... hmmm, what is sucking memory? Did an analyze for defragging and says it does not need to be defragged. I attempt to defrag all our computers once a month unless it tells me it doesn't need it.

It had 680 temp files three of which would not delete. Still no help. I have only two active programs running spy and virus protection. The best I see with only those is 60k free. Loading FF knocked me down to 9800. Now with just FF on it is sitting at about 49000 available.

Perhaps run hijack this? That way we can see the running processes

Since I don't like reading through hijack this files, I use this: http://hjt.networktechs.com/

It does a decent job of analyzing your report. I pasted your's in and it doesn't like your
"c:\windows\system32\cwlsp.dll", and then some other minor things too.

<edit> reading around a bit about cwlsp.dll, it doesn't seem to be a threat. But, I would still look into it to make sure ( http://www.fbmsoftware.com/spyware-net/Process/cwlsp_dll/3420/ )</edit>

Spooky -> RE: Upgrade Ram or Buy New Computer (11/7/2006 14:58:37)

From the quick look I had, Find fast is quite a resource hog, I would loose that:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

These dont need to be running either
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE
C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\bin\jusched.exe

Not too sure what sore of hog AOL is, but Im guessing youll still need those

jaybee -> RE: Upgrade Ram or Buy New Computer (11/7/2006 15:07:39)

Take a look in your start up folder too and get rid of anything you don't need. Spooky's right though, get rid of fast find and if you have that daft office toolbar on your desktop kill that too.

You also seem to have some game controllers and extra toolbars?

Nick -> RE: Upgrade Ram or Buy New Computer (11/7/2006 15:23:19)

Ok, I love being the village idiot... I can check all three of these programs after running a hijack scan, but how do I delete them? I don't see a delete button nor does my delete button on keyboard do anything.

Nick

Nick -> RE: Upgrade Ram or Buy New Computer (11/7/2006 15:38:00)

Hey Brian,

That dll is a component of our internet filter (Content Protect) for our hormonal 16 year old. Thanks for checking my file for me though! Going to look at the link you provided.

Nick
