Can't access your site? - 11/9/2006 7:41:32
Monday, I was doing a lot of uploads to a test database on my host so a client could play around with some software whilst I worked on the live version on her host.

All went well until I browsed back to the site to check and got timed out. Figured the host was having problems so decided to finish for the day. Next morning, still not there so I did a traceroute and ping and found no response.

Spoke to the host and discovered they were blocking my IP address. Miffed or what.

Anyway, for others that may get this problem, here's the deal. My host automatically block IP addresses where there have been a number of failed login attempts, they state more than 3 in any 15 minute period. The IP address then remains blocked for a period of time, they obviously won't say how long.

This confused me as I hadn't had any failed attempts that I was aware of but it seems it can happen due to your email client, FTP client and any other software you use that connects to your host.

In my case, it was my FTP client (one they recommended I switch to BTW). I had done all my uploads and then gone off to do something else, I hadn't shut the FTP down. The connection had timed out and the software tried to reconnect, failed due to some sort of glitch, retried, failed and so on.

There's not a lot you can do as far as I can see. Obviously don't leave stuff running and make sure any retry settings that are available are set to a maximum of two tries in any reasonable period (check with your host).

I'm using Filezilla Mango, it's pretty easy to use and was using it all day yesterday and left it running despite a few failed login attempts I didn't suffer what Jaybee has described above. Perhaps I was just lucky but I find Filezilla pretty easy to use.

Mango dearest I've tried several. They all have their ups and downs. I used Filezilla for a while until I got some rather odd results with PHP file uploads so I ditched that.

I have a paid for FTP client called Terrapin and that's pretty good but it goes through phases of refusing to talk to the host, think it's a Win patch problem. The only reason I keep it is that it entertains you during file uploads with a little Terrapin running across the top of the screen. Having said that it drives you nuts after file upload no. 150.

So now I'm using what my host recommended which seems pretty good apart from the login attempts which might just be me not setting it right. There's a freebie and a paid version, I'm using the freebie which is OK for 30 days. Then I have a decision to make.

Cute FTP

What was the server response when you tried to connect via FTP?

What? When?

If you mean re the stuff in my first post it all connected fine as far as I was concerned. It's only my host records that say there were failed connects, I was totally oblivious to the whole thing.

You said that the FTP program caused the reconnect, which ended up causing the blocking due to the host's restrictions:

When the FTP program cannot connect, it spits back an error, a response description/code from the server. I was just wondering what the error message was. But I guess if you didn't know about the failed connects, you probably didn't grab any error messages (if any).

CCC

you are right! Filezilla is pretty nice and simple to use. I have tried several myself and was into FTP_WS for quite some time. I just dislike the interface sooooo much! Also, it's gotten expensive and I feel it hasn't changed much from the days when it was free.

CuteFTP sort of looks like Coffecup's FTP I find a few a couple of advantages in Coffeecup's:

1. graphics can be previewed in a pane
2. the price is $34 but if you visit their site and put the product in the shopping cart, fill the info (except your credit card) and then exit without buying it, they'll send you an offer with an interesting discount that brings the price to less than $30

Ladies, try it for a couple of days. I feel you'll find it reliable

Thanks, I will. Thumbnails of graphics would be pretty useful. What's it like with detecting PASV connections?

I use AceFTP which is free and also has a preview pane. Nice simple 3 pane arrangement - not as cluttered as SmartFTP.

AceFTP

Hi Helena

do you feel there is a lot of difference between AceFTP and AceFTPPro? I personally like the 'resume' feature in the Pro version. I wonder if it really works.

Also I like the 'scheduled' uploads very much. I have a few customers whose sites must be updated at specific dates. Many times, I update the information daysin advance but must wait until a specific date to upload. I am forced to go back a few days later and publish their site the day of the big sale! With scheduling, I could program it. Have you had any experience with this feature? Is it reliable?

For those of you who have paid for FTP software, what made you buy it?

The only thing I could see paying for that FileZilla does not have, is the ability to run a recursive chmod.

Hey Bobby

well, I definitely wanted something better than what's in DW and FP, especially since I do a lot of our sites with notepad.

Basically, what made me want to pay was

1 friendly interface

2.fast connectivity

3. queded uploads/multiple uploads

4. scheduled uploads (especially for newsletters)

5. preview pane with flash capability

if you are into Unix, I can see the need for recursive chmod.

All and all, my choice is AceFTPPro. Even though I paid for WS_FTP and Coffeecup's FTP, I am dishing out 27 bucks for a great application.

I have a very old version of AceFTP, I'll take a look at the new one.

Whoa, I just checked out AceFTPPro. Do you find that interface at all busy?

4. scheduled uploads (especially for newsletters)

- This is something I haven't seen in FileZilla. Does the scheduling allow you to schedule it based on a new file being created in a specific directory? For example, if I run a home security system with jpg output for motion detection, I would love to see those jpgs uploaded to a server to view remotely.

Bobby

I feel it could be feasible. the way I see it is: if you schedule it for uploads at specific times and if you have a way to update you site content (such as the one you mention) I think it could be done. There's of course the issue of connection. However, I suppose it could be done.

How do you feel about that FTP client? not bad huh? Especially for the price

- Just by looking at the Ace screenshots, I find it way too cluttered. The thing I like best about FF, is that the most used things are right in front of you. Ace looks to have quite a few extra config options though, but I haven't ever had the need for anything more (other than recursive chmod). I like the idea that you can have a preview of the file, as well as scheduled uploads.

This is the first time I have even heard of Ace, so I think I need to give it a try before I say anything else about it.
