Open page in new tab - 11/10/2006 16:34:45
Hope this is the correct forum - simple question, but possibly 'new' or advanced feature....

Is there yet html code for opening in a new tab? target=_blank will open in a new window, but with the browsers going to tabbed browsing, has there been new code to do this?

And, if so, what do we do as 'backup' for the browsers that don't support it?

Thank you all for any info you might have!

Cheers!

All you can do is code the link to open a new window - you have no control over how the user has their browser set up. They may or may not have it set up to open in a new tab or a new window. They may well have it set up to open in the same window whatever you do your end.

All be aware that in most cases opening a new window isn't a good thing - it confuses people and breaks the "back" button. There are exceptions, but not many. If you absolutely must open a new window, please warn people either explicitly in the link text or within the title attribute - basically the user should know that clicking the link will open a new window.

Because it's a user option - it's up to the user how they set up their browser rather than the website designer. Some browsers don't have tabs - some people have them de-activated.

Best not to open new windows at all except in rare circumstances. If you absolutely must open a new window then use javascript rather than target so that if the user doesn't have javascript or if they have popups disabled then they'll at least get the page opening on their existing window.

What's the big deal with opening new windows anyway? Nothing more annoying than browsing a site, shutting the window and finding there are another 10 open underneath it.

If the reason is that you want people to stay with your site even though they've clicked on a link to another site then all I can say is that you are obviously not confident that your site is interesting enough for them to want to come back to it.

If you provide the visitor with what they want then they will come back, if they genuinely want to leave your site then it's rude to force them back.

The only occasion when IMO it's legitimate to open a new window is if there is additional information to a page and it's helpful to have both open together, or with something like streaming sound where you may want that open whilst looking at the main page. Then, as Tailslide says, the title tag should be applied to the link so that people with screen readers are warned that a new window is opening.

Yes I admit, I've opened new windows to linked sites in the past but I've stopped. There's really no need to do it and it can annoy people. With the tabbed browsers they have the option to open pages in new windows, new tabs or the same window. They will have set that to their preference and you shouldn't be telling them they're wrong.

Even more annoying are the sites where you arrive at the home page and they've disabled the back button completely so if you try to leave it just keeps serving up that page. You're stuck on the site unless you type a new URL in the address bar. Those annoy me intensely and I usually block the site completely so I never go back to it, even accidentally.
