maduko -> 1&1 Hosting (11/10/2006 16:47:08)

I just completed a move to 1 and 1 hosting. It's only been a couple of days but I'm already wondering if I did the right thing.

Most of my content is stored in Access and it seems like the pages take forever to load. Their documentation says there is a limit of 20 concurrent connections, but that should be plenty.

Has anyone else had experience with 1&1?

1&1 is great for personal hosting. Business related sites that generate income should be placed with a much better host. There is a HUGE jump in the level of service between a host like 1&1, and a host that charges an extra $5-$10 a month over 1&1.

What made you leave your previous host?

- Have you completed a tracert report?

1) Click 'Start' and select 'Run'.
2) Type 'cmd' (without quotes) and click Ok.
3) Then inside the window, type 'tracert yourdomain > report.txt'

Open up C:\report.txt and remove the first couple lines that contain your IP address. Then post the rest of the report here.

This will determine how fast of a connection your computer has with the server you are trying to connect to.

If the results show low numbers, then the problem is with the server. If the results show large numbers, then the problem is with your specific connection to their server, which also could be due to a problem with their server.

I removed some of the personal IP info that isn't needed for this. As jaybee noted, hop 12 is where your slowdown comes from. You need to contact your host and provide them with the full tracert report. They should be able to re-route you without having to go through level3.

Some hosts even offer multiple bandwidth providers (level3, mzima, etc..). The great thing about this, is that you get routed to whichever one has the least amount of hops. 1&1 is fairly large, so I would assume that they would invest in multiple providers.

- It really comes down to what you expect from a host. More expensive hosts arent for everyone. If you're fine with what you have, no reason to pay more. I have a feeling that 1&1 will just tell you this isn't their problem, and never do anything about it. Keep in mind though that not everyone will experience the same slowdown as you.

Send them a support e-mail/ticket and see what they can do, be sure to provide them the full tracert report, as well as the time/day it was done.

If you tracert this IP, you should see different results based on your specific location> 72.34.41.112. The last few hops will show you who it goes through, for me it shows Mzima.

I have a friend that is using 1and1 for a non-profit site. They have given her zero support. Never responded to her emails when she had a question. My understanding is that 1and1 has millions of clients and they just can't respond to all.

- Normally it is the lack of care that these hosts have for their clients. Make sure she is using the correct support method too... I think 1&1 does ticket support and then you can reply to the actual tickets via email. I don't remember if they provide full e-mail support though. Luckily I haven't had to deal with them for awhile, so I don't quite remember their routine support method.

Jaybee mentioned these guys awhile ago, I tried out their support a couple times to get an idea about how good their support actually is, and they replied very quickly to my e-mails. I'm not sure how stable/secure everything is, but when I tried their support I was happy.
