Harley -> Frontpage Hit Counters (11/19/2006 8:36:47)

Back with another trivial (no doubt) question. When I insert a hitcounter via the Web Components menu, all that comes up is [Hit Counter], but no actual counter.

Can anyone offer a solution?

Difficult to say without a url or some code [;)] but the hit counter's one of the FP components that requires FrontPage Server Extensions. It could be that the extensions either aren't installed or are corrupted. You could try reinstalling them, or asking your host to if you can't access it. Failing that, a url, so we can see what the problem is.

Brilliant, the cp on my hosting account has an option for 'Install Frontpage Extensions', so I presume this'll do the trick?

Im afraid ive activated the extensions, but im having the same problem. See here: http://www.gillfordparkfc.co.uk/ the hit counter is in the bottom right of the black box and is just coming up [Hit Counter] as usual (though it is in the same colour as the box and you shall have to highlight the area for it to be visible).

<womble class="bewildered" id="never confused">
Hmmmm, I can't see any mention of a hit counter anywhere in the black box, even when highlighted, and I can't see anything in the code that suggests there's a hit counter on there. How exactyly are you inserting it?

The black box is made up of 4 table cells, one down the left side, one at the top right and two directly below it. Of the two below, i put the cursor in the righthand box and then press the Web Component button. Frm there I select hit counter and the one 4-down the list. The hit counter properties box pops up and I simply press okay, et voila...

Hmmmm, can't seem to get to your site. Is it down at the moment?

FP components are notoriously flaky at times though. Personally, not that I tend to use them (if you're not careful hit counters tend to only show how many visitors you haven't had, can be faked, and don't really serve any useful purpose) I'd go for a non-FP option. You can usually get detailed stats about your domain (in much more detail than you'll get from a hit counter) through your hosting account, or there are various hit counters out there where it's just a case of copying and pasting the code for it into your page. Statcounter is a good (free) one that I've used, that has a visible and invisble option. Maybe someone who uses Frontpage more (I don't tend to use it much these days) will be able to come along with further insights on FP hit counters, but personally I'd look at using something that you can get more info out of.

Thanks, my site is down yes. The hitcounter has been requested by people at the club ive made it for, so its not really my choice, as I can make do with using my webstats

Thanks anyway

Are you using Publish to get your site up there or FTP. You need to use Publish.

Harley -> RE: Frontpage Hit Counters (11/25/2006 13:58:13)

Thanks, i'll try that,

If you've been using FTP then you've probably corrupted your FPSEs and will need to reinstall them.
