StenB -> Pentium 4 to Core 2 Duo (11/19/2006 9:52:19)

Hi all,
With the arrival of Vista around the corner and Direct X 10 I'm looking to upgrade my pc's hardware but I'd like some advice.
I currently have a pentium 4 cpu, can I upgrade to a Core 2 Duo without needing a new main board?
Also my p4 is 3Ghz, do I get better performace from a lesser clock speed cpu if it's Core 2 Duo?
Finally what sort of heat sink options do you think is best with this new porcessor?
I'm not exactly limiting myself to a budget but at the same time I don't want to spend over the top amounts of money with

this! I'm also looking to upgrade my graphic's card to support Direct X 10 but I only have a pci express slot for graphics, any

recommendations?

Your the core 2 duo will fit the 775 slot, however youll need to check with the manufacturer if its supported or not.
Typically youll need the 965/75 chipset to run with the duo.
The heatsink would depend on how much overclocking you plan on doing. Generally they run cooler than the old chips anyhow

Yes, the lower clock speed will thrash your previous chip!
