google on the intraweb - 11/20/2006 12:17:25
Hey all,

Our company uses Google search for portions of our intraweb.

I am on a committee charged with identifying some of the issues with this site and the fact that the Google search is not consistent has been noted.

My question is how much of the normal SEO items matter when there are no other sites to compete against?

Most of the pages in question have auto-generated meta tags with information on the program used to create the page, rather than actual content, so I know that's one issue. Also most of the images don't have alt text, so as I understand it that's another. But I don't know much else and trying to learn is difficult because most resources are about getting your site to the top of the list-- but here the site is the only site indexed, so it is on the top by default. The question here is how to make individual pages come to the top and other than the obvious ones mentioned above I don't know any.

I did not work with Google at all and was not involved in the project. Further, the areas of the site in question are not under my jurisdition. Therefore I am only idea-shopping, to come up with suggestions for the actual owner of this site. Rather than saying "the google engine doesn't work well" I'd like to be able to say "the google engine doesn't work well and could be improved by..."

thanks in advance.
