Photoshop ? - 11/21/2006 12:23:37
This should be a fairly simple task, but obviously not simple enough for my simple mind. I have a gif that is simply a black symbol on a white background. I want to either change the color of the background or make it transparent. Can this be done?

Oh I suppose now you want to know how. Far be it from me to refer you to the menu bar where it says HELP. :)

You have 2 options. to change the colour of the background use the color replacer tool. In the palette boxes set the background box (the lower of the two) to the current colour and the foreground to the new colour. Then just sweep over the graphic and the background should change. If not, it probably means you have layers so bring up the layer window, select the background layer then sweep.

As for transparency, that one gets me every time. I remember the "make sure it's RGB" bit but then it goes pear shaped, so there I really do have to refer you to the Help menu. Just type transparency in the search box.

Thanks JayBee. I struggled with the color replace feature for a while before I posted. I was able to make it a transparency via the magic eraser tool. I don't know what it is about Photoshop, but it is the one product I really seem to struggle with.

Me too. I keep going back to PSP all the time, especially for transparency which I can get to work in Photoshop about half the time. I must be missing something.

The colour replacer is fairly straightforward though. If in doubt, flatten the image before you do anything, that way it's all on one layer.
