HDD - 11/25/2006 3:58:29
My kids PC is about 4 years old now, and I've upgraded the memory, but now I need some more storage. I want to go from the current 40 GB drive up to about 160-200Gb for music and photos etc.

I think the current one has an IDE connection, but all the modern drives seem to be ATA or SATA. No idea what the difference is but how can I find out if my machine will work with an ATA before I shell out for one.

Its A compaq presario S3150UK. I couldnt see anything on the Compaq site that helped.

Any ideas?

Thks

You need to look for a PATA drive which is the parallel version of the SATA. If you can't find one of those then stick with your current drive and buy an external USB drive to plug in.

Thanks.

Never heard of a PATA before. I was hopeing to avoid the separate power supply it already looks like a an electricity substation what with the phone, speakers, monitor, PC, Router, etc

ATA
PATA is really only in use to distinguish between it and SATA. If it's listed as an ATA you should be fine. Just read the instructions to make sure it says parallel. Try for a 7200rpm.

You may need to do a BIOS upgrade for the mobo to accept the drive as it's so much larger than what you already have.
