This problem I was so hoping was solved with this new Expression software, but alas...

My galleries display fine in IE but terribly (stretching out and causing horizontal scrolling) in Firefox. Ive scanned the seach engines etc for ages trying to solve this and came to the conclusion that it could not be fixed.

however, seeing some of the posts in this forum gives me a hint of hope that I can sort something out. people liek kitka? etc seem to know their onions.

Basically I want pages like 'One of my webpages with problems' display like they do in IE.

Alternatively, I see these same names banded about for alternative gallery oftware , If I am to replace this gallery I want one that displays as mine does now, if possible to also add hyperlinks to the text boxes too that would be a bonus.

Unfortunately, most MS auto generated stuff is meant to display in IE and the other browsers can go hang.

Go look at lightbox
there are two examples, single images and gallery sets. Each allow you to put text at the bottom of the image and the good news is, you can put links in there as well.

The problem with most of M$'s FP components such as the gallery etc. is that they use proprietary code, that is, non-standard code that's understood only by IE and not by the standards compliant browsers such as Firefox, Opera and Mozilla.

The photo gallery component is one of the ones that won't display right in other browsers, as you've discovered. As far as I know there isn't a fix. Your only alternative if you want it to display the same in other browsers is to use a photo gallery that uses standards compliant code. There are a number of full blown gallery options such as Coppermine, Plogger, etc., most of which are pretty configurable and come with instructions. Sites such as Dynamic Drive have a number of relatively simple image gallery scripts. In most cases they're a matter of copying and pasting the code into your page, but they're not WYSIWYG like FP's components - you do need to go into the code.

Hmm, guess this isnt what I need, cant rid the makers ads etc :-( will try some more but so much work finding things nver mind using them :-)

thought there be some expert who could wrap or table them somehow..

Thanx Mike.. however that was the one I was ctually using and found it did mostly what I wanted.. however there wasnt/isnt a way t remove the text link from the makers etc and that doesnt fit into the site v well. thanks tho' . so one similar o that is fine but no added links etc :-)

I found this in the JAlbum FAQ, is this your problem? JAlbum shouldn't be showing copyright or ads according to their site.

My apologies, it wasnt that one that I was referring to actually. I had been trying out 2. that one I couldnt get to display as I wantd to, i.e display a centre large picture b4 a picture is clicked on.. (therefor making it look the same as my existing fp galleries)

The other one that I couldnt remove the link etc was the one offered by ornj.net . a shame too cos it is reallly nice tool.

Plogger's a nice one, though it's not the same format as your existing one.

Right, this is how you don't do it

There's a css file called main.css

Open it in notepad or FP
Scroll down to the bottom

You'll find some code headed /* Footnote */
you need to add a bit. On the line that says
p.footnote {

you need to add

display:none;

make sure you don't miss the colon or the semi colon. The code should look exactly as in the box below. Save the file main.css and upload it over the existing one. 


/* Footnote */
p.footnote {display:none;
	font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
	font-size: 0.6em;
	text-align: right;
	padding: 0 2em 0 0;
}
SO that's how you get rid of the footer if you wanted to which of course you don't. [:)]

Please do but remember I only posted it by way of a CSS tutorial to show how flexible it can be if you use it properly. As it was just a demo, don't forget to remove that line when you've finished.

I wont, - and if i can get it work as i want then i will add to thier donations . (seems bit silly u cant do that via code or something)

Anyway.. now that it can feasibly be used, do you know if it is possible to have it display the first photograph in the sequence automatically? as oppose to it waiting until an item is clicked on? (again referring to my current scheme on my site, to display the large pic n text)

[sm=yikes.gif] But you can, that's what CSS is all about. The code to change all the styling is taken out of the page and put in a file by itself. To not do what I told you above means that you just change that one thing in the css. Without that you'd have to change every single page or start wading around in the code to remove it. CSS rocks. Honestly it does.

I'm sure you can have it display the first image. Have a read through the instructions and check out his site to see what it says.

The version I used on a client's site certainly does but I've hacked the code beyond all recognition so its pointless me showing it to you.

Actually yes you can. Instead of linking to the gallery index page, link to the first image page.

Example.

On his site the example entry page is
http://www.ornj.net/webalbum/sample/index.html
and that's what he links to from his main page

His first image page is
http://www.ornj.net/webalbum/sample/victoriaairport.html
so if he linked to that instead he's go straight to having the first page open rather than a page full of thumbnails.

That's what I've done on my client site.

Ok a lot of this is great info and I am sure is going to be utilise further..

Ok, so yes that looks liek what i want, i will dabble and look at it... this is my must do task for now.

Ok, thats the design side, now a bit about the seo side.

Our current site does pretty well and the gallery that we use via FP uncludes all the text that is included in the galley on one individual page, giving you great content for the search engines etc.
I see a lot of these gallery scripts etc that create seperate html pages for each photo and text 'part' . I wish it to work, again as it does now, by being htnl code all on that index page.

How would I go about that? or does that literally require different scripts?

The FP Gallery works entirely differently. It pulls the pictures in to a single page. You can't have all the text on the same page in this one but I don't see that as a problem. Google will spider each page when it finds the link to the first one. It also means your site has more pages for Google to index which can mean higher ranking as there's more content.

If you want something that works exactly the same way as FP Gallery but much cleaner then you'll have to bite the CSS bullet. This one has everything in one page.

Yes I saw that particular one before too. that looks so close to what i need.. now if only i could change that scroll bar to be a simple arrow type button on either side it display the pic below as oppose to above 'we'd' have cracked it!

Ah, but that's the fun bit! Chopping it all up, adding in your own bits, putting it all back together....then comes the exciting bit...

...uploading it to the server and seeing if it still works! [:D]
