Do I risk disaster if I delete all remote files? - 11/25/2006 15:16:17
I recently set up a sub-site, and while all appeared to go OK, ever since I did that, I am getting server errors complaining about the change I made directly on the server while setting up the subsite, and also about "conflicts" between files.

There are no "conflicts" when I publish to a clean directory on my hard drive..

I also have some un-wanted files on the server that Frontpage says it will delete, but never deletes them for some reason.

I recently messed up the sub-site and instead of working endlessly to fix it, I simply deleted all the files that appeared in the right-hand pane after I had invoked "Publish Site", and that worked fine.

I'm thinking I should be able to do the same thing with my main site and get rid of some unwanted files and maybe the "conflict" errors also.

I have a good backup on my hard drive, so I think I would be fairly safe.

Is there a disaster waiting to happen that I just don't see?

Thanks much,

CJ

Should be OK as long as you don't zap any .htaccess files if you're on Unix, and make absolutely sure you don't delete any host folders that are in there.

I would leave the index file as well and let it get overwritten on upload.

Thanks, JB... it worked!

I love your tagline "if it ain't broke, fix it". [smile].

Thanks a bundle!

I follow that advice every day. I spend 5 minutes tweaking something and then spend the rest of the day fixing the tweak. :)

Lots of us around here do that. She's taught us well. :):)

Yep... I'm sure you aren't alone either (is she Womble?)... but not being technical enough to tweak my own computer, I think keeps me out of a lot of trouble!

For the hardware side I now live with a tame comp engineer so when I want something done I can abdicate all responsibility for the ensuing chaos. :)

Well, that is an advantage!

I have another server issue that I was about to ask about, but I guess I'd better sign out here and go create a correctly named thread... it's about using the FrontPage Search template

Thanks much for your help!
